No Binding. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Lot of 5 issues of this scarce publication, the New York Review of Sex, also known as the New York Review of Sex and Politics. An interesting highlight during a prolific time for countercultural, adult oriented papers, this one being based in New York and published 1969, and much more intently oriented towards "highbrow" expressions and reflections of sexuality, avoiding the trappings that eroticism can find in bawdy nature and instead treating sexuality with dignity and combining it as well with community and political mindedness. Contains classifieds, event listings, expose style journalistic pieces, think pieces on censorship, and so forth. Ample photographs, both posed and of documentary nature, drawings and paintings erotically charged. Contributions by many otherwise well known in the artistic and literary worlds, such as Ed Sanders, Peter Hujar, Gregory Battcock, Dan Graham, Charles Bukowski, Mel Ramos, and many others. Too political for some, too sexual for the others, issues of this are uncommon. Large unbound newspaper tabloid format. The first five issues. Begun Feb 1969. Condition varies from issue to issue, but all are consistent in respect to overall sturdiness and cleanliness. Really quite crisp overall, not beat up and heavily folded in half as usual, but quite straight and clean. Occasional toning to covers around the edges, and to a lesser degree some occasional toning interiors, but mostly they are quite crisp copies. Some foxing around the edges of the third issue, which also has slightly more intense toning than the other 4. Some occasionally folding and creasing, which can be seen in the photo's here. A handful of tiny tears across the first 3 or 4 issues but nothing egregious or entirely noteworthy. Some occasional wear around the edges including to interior pages where interior may have protruded. Most notable issue may be the use of pen by former owner, almost entirely exclusive to classifieds on the rear covers, and all quite minimal and neat, with one or two minor notations within as well. Overall though all issues are in excellent shape, especially considering the format and the age. Though we will try to describe each issue, please review the statements above as well as photos. Issue 1 has some light bumping at the top and a teeny tiny chip that runs throughout at the bottom edge. Some light toning and soiling to covers but not much. Issue 2 has some light stains that appear be from the printing press on the front cover and two blue pen marks from previous owner to the back cover. Teeny chip to a couple of pages at the foredge at the margins, very negligible. Minor toning around the edges. Volume 3, as mentioned, has some foxing at the top edge mostly relegated to the front cover, with some minor occasion of it to the top edge of the ensuing pages. Whole issue lightly bumped at both upper right and bottom right corner. Very small closed tear at the bottom edge of the front cover. Teeny tiny puncutre from page 11 through the end in the margin by the foredge, hardly noticeable. One black pen ink mark on the back cover by previous owner. Issue 4 has the price on the front blacked out and someone has written the new price above in crayon or colored pencil. Removal attempted but not finished. Some toning around the edges, some very light bumping. Three teeny tiny puncture marks at the margins also from page 11 to the end, negligible. Two black ink pen marks on rear cover from previous owner. Some stray ink on the covers that appears to be from manufacturing. Issue 5 has some light bumping at the top right corner, some even lesser so at the bottom right. 3 or 4 teeny punctures from page 13 on to the end in the same spot in the margins. Negligible. Some stray colorations from printing press on covers, No pen marks on this one. All told, excellent copies of this very scarce publication.
