Soft cover. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. The "Lewis Padgett" (Henry Kuttner & C.L. Moore) novella "Chessboard Planet" was first serialized in "Astounding" magazine in 1946 as "The Fairy Chessmen", then included in a 1951 Gnome Press Kuttner/Moore collection under that same title, Galaxy Science Fiction Novel #26, a 1956 digest format pulp boook, was its first standalone publication, and its first under the title "Chessboard Planet". And in 1983 it was the featured story in the Hamlyn (UK) paperback Kuttner collection, "Chessboard Planet and Other Stories". Offered for your SF library: a collectible copy of the fragile 1956 Galaxy SF Novel, PLUS a nice reading copy of the 1983 Hamlyn paperback. The Galaxy book appears unread, and is in good+ condition, marred only by a 1/2" chip out of front top corner, a narrow 1.25" long chip in the right edge of the front cover, wear with a short closed tear at bottom of the spine, a narrow 1/2" chip on bottom back corner, traces of smudging on the back cover, and some sun toning along top edge of the covers. The binding is tight and square, with no reading creases in the spine or hinges. Covers and pages are unmarked, with very light age toning to the pulp paper. The Hamlyn paperback is in good+ condition, with a sound binding and unmarked pages. As with all Space Age Book purchases, I will ship these books in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure they reach their proud new owner in the same condition as my description. Bibliographic note: the ISBN in this listing is for the Hamlyn paperback.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. As "Lewis Padgett", Catherine L. Moore and her husband, Henry Kuttner, wrote four "Baldy" stories about teenage mutants in 1945. In 1953 Gnome Press collected those four stories plus a new "Baldy" novelette in the fix-up novel "Mutant". Offered here are TWO editions of "Mutant": a 1953 Gnome Press first edition hardcover in very good condition featuring a C. L. Moore signature, PLUS a 1963 Ballantine 1st US paperback edition in near fine condition. The Gnome Press book has "First Edition" on its copyright page. Glued to its front end paper is an index card that was signed by Catherine L. Moore in the 1980s for the Old London Bookshop in Seattle WA. The book's binding is sound, with a little spine lean. The blue cloth-covered boards are unmarked and unfaded, with light wear at top and bottom of spine and on corners. The pages have some light stains and a little foxing around edges of the text block, and in the margins of a few pages. Otherwise the pages are unmarked, and have almost no age toning. The price-clipped dust jacket, now protected by a removable mylar cover has light wear at top and bottom of spine and on corners, plus some light soiling on back, a 2" closed edge tear in top back hinge, and a little light rubbing on front. The Ballantine "F 724" paperback has a shallow crease in its back cover, but no reading crease in its spine. Its covers and pages are unmarked, with only traces of wear on cover edges and corners, and almost no age toning. As with all Space Age Book purchases, I will ship these books in a moisture proof zip-loc bag, padded in bubble wrap, inside a sturdy box to assure they reach their proud new owner in the same condition as my description.

Octavo, boards. First edition. Collects two short novels first published in ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION as two-part serials in January-February 1947 and January-February 1946 respectively. ". Kuttner's reputation rests primarily on the literate and sophisticated stories he and Moore wrote for John W. Campbell's ASTOUNDING STORIES during the 1940s ." - Gunn (ed), The New Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, p. 261. "During the period between 1942 and 1947, Kuttner and Moore contributed forty-one stories to ASTOUNDING -- forty-eight by 1955 -- including three two-part serials and one three-part serial. The significance of their contribution, however, lies not in the quantity nor the continuation of the thrust of Campbell's new ideas about science fiction through difficult years, although these factors are meaningful. They were one (of two or four) of the finest writers to marry magazine science fiction to literary form, to do it sufficiently often to be noticeable and effective, and to do it -- though perhaps without deliberate intent -- with increasing skill . Their contributions to the wartime magazine period sustained the level of that 'golden age' which had begun around 1938 or 1939." - James Gunn, "Henry Kuttner, C. L. Moore, Lewis Padgett, et al," Thomas D. Clareson, ed, Voices For the Future (1976), volume 1, pp. 191-92.
