Hardcover. Etat : New. ISBN:9789359441535,192pp. Vedic Myths and Rituals, edited by Jan E.M. Houben and Julieta Rotaru, explores the intricate relationship between Vedic myths and Vedic rituals. The book delves into the symbolic and practical dimensions of Vedic traditions, offering fresh insights into ancient Indian religious practices. The essays in this volume address both problems of the textual sources of the most ancient myths and rituals, and reflections on different models of theorizing the Vedic myths and rituals. The volume presents a rich tapestry of topics, ranging from the study of myths and their employment in rituals, as seen in the story of the horse of Pedu and its connection to snake poison remedies, to the formal structures of Vedic rituals like the Sviṣṭakṛt that is an important part of numerous Vedic rituals such as the Agniṣṭoma. The book also examines the role of myths in understanding rituals such as the Saumikī Dīkṣā, the consecration for the Soma sacrifice, and questions the authenticity of female puberty rituals in ancient Vedic and Indian culture. In an exploration of the significance of commendations in the Atharvavedic tradition from ancient Kauśikasūtra to current practices of the Odisha Paippalādin scholars, ritualistic performances of entrusting individuals to divine protection through symbolic acts and prayers are highlighted. Additionally, it provides interpretations of lesser-known rituals, such as the bride with the yoke in the Kauśikasūtra, and explores interplay of word, style, and myth in the operation of Vedic rituals including medicinal magic. This volume is a valuable resource for scholars and students of Vedic studies, offering a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the deep connections between myth, ritual, and symbolism in ancient Indian culture. Through detailed analyses and innovative interpretations, the contributors shed light on the enduring significance of Vedic traditions in shaping religious and cultural practices.…

Hardcover. Etat : New. In the course of millennia of dealing with problems of violence, South Asia has not only elaborated the ideal of total avoidance of violence in a unique manner, it also developed arguments justifying and rationalizing its employment under certain circumstances. Some of these arguments seemingly transform all sorts of 'violence' into 'nonviolence'. Historical and cultural aspects of the tensions between violence and its denial and rationalization in South Asia are taken up in the contributions of this volume which deal with topics ranging from the origins of the concept of ahimsa, to the iconography and interpretation of a self-beheading goddess, and violent heroines in Ajneyas Hindi short stories. About the Author Jan E.M. Houben, at present working at the Kern Institute, Leiden University, obtained his Ph.D. in 1992 for a thesis on Bhartrhari's philosophy of language, and published on South Asia's philosophical and linguistic tradition as well as on Vedic ritual. Karel R. van Kooij, Professor of South Asian Art and Material Culture, Kern Institute, Leiden University, obtained his Ph.D. in 1972 for a thesis on the Kalika Purana, and published on Buddhist and Hindu Iconography with regard to Nepal, India and Sri Lanka.…

The 41 papers in the present volume by Vedic scholars from Europe (Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Switzerland, U.K.), from the U.S.A., from India and from Japan, contribute to "the study of a civilization based on its texts" the brief definition of philology given in Michael Witzel's Introduction to the Proceedings of the First International Vedic Workshop edited by Michael Witzel (1997). The papers, although many may cover more than one field or topic, are placed in three broad categories. The second category is further divided Veda-wise. : 1) GENERAL STUDIES AND TOPICS ON SAKHAS: twelve papers in connection with the theme of the conference, Vedic Sakhas: past, present, future; 2) Twenty three SPECIFIC STUDIES ON SAKHAS: five on Rig Veda, ten on Yajur Veda, three on Sama Veda, five on Atharva Veda; 3) LINGUISTIC STUDIES: six studies on linguistic issues in connection with the Vedas and the Vedic Sakhas.…
