Howse, Head of the French Department at Chartesey School, London. First published in 1952, this is the 1959 reprint, issued jointly by Macmillan (London) and St Martin's Press (New Yor…k). Original manilla card wrappers with a charming illustrated café scene on the front cover. Condition: Fair to Good, showing honest wear consistent with a well-used mid-century schoolbook. The front cover has a notable area of paper loss/tearing to the lower portion of the cover illustration, along with surface soiling, foxing, and a vertical crease. Corners are bumped and edges are rubbed and toned. The spine is held by the original staple binding, visible along the spine edge, with some wear at the head and tail. A previous owner's name is inscribed in pencil on the front cover. Internally, the text block is clean and legible throughout, with light tanning to the page edges typical of the era; pages remain securely bound. Overall a well-loved study copy, complete and readable, with charm in its wear.
