Hugh Thomson (illustrateur). ### Highways & Byways in GLOUCESTERSHIRE: January/August 1932 By Edward Hutton ### ## THIS BOOK: Classified as VERY GOOD, This is either January or August 1932 Edition; as both this and the first edition were printed in 1932, I am assuming this is the reprinted edition of August 1932; the first edition was published in January 1932. There wasn't any update, so it will be the same book.## ## The Gloucestershire edition of this series of books is in its original smooth blue cloth covering; the title on the spine is gilded, the top of the pages is coloured blue; On the inside cover, a previous owner's small inscription. The spine is discoloured; there is regular bumping to the corners and spine bottom. Inside, the endpapers are slightly discoloured; the text has no foxing. There is no foxing on the map; the map is folded correctly and not torn. ## ## There are over 120 illustrations by Hugh Thomson. The drawing's quality is fantastic; when drawn, a moment in history will never be again; what an excellent way to see how much of the subject of the drawings has changed or disappeared. Take this book on a journey to find each drawing's subject for real.# ## BIT OF HISTORY: Macmillan published the Highways and Byways series of 36 regional guides between 1898 and 1948. These guides are noted for their presentation of a wide variety of exciting places, notable historical events, local flora and fauna, folklore, and legends, as well as the artwork produced by many noted artists, including Arthur B. Connor, Nelly Erichsen, Frederick L. Griggs, Joseph McCullough, Edmund H. New, Joseph Pennell, Hugh Thomson, Sir D.Y. Cameron and S. R. Badmin. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note. A smart set of six first-editions of "Highways & Byways" topographical guides, richly illustrated with maps and vignettes, in original bindings with two rebacked volumes. In the publisher's original green and blue cloth bindings, with the exception of "Kent" and "Oxford and Cotswolds" which have been re-backed, with original binding affixed to darker green backing cloth. These volumes are first editions. The 'Highways & Byways' series was a set of thirty-six regional topographical guides published between 1898 and 1948. They were hugely popular, and were printed in numerous editions.
