'The Physics (Kitab al-sama' al-tabii) was the very first volume that Avicenna wrote when he began his monumental encyclopedia of science and philosophy The Healing (al-Shifa'). Avicenna's reasons for beginning with the Physics are numerous: It offers up the principles needed to understand such special natural sciences as psychology; it sets up many of the problems that take center stage in his Metaphysics; and it even provides concrete examples of many of the abstract analytical tools that he would develop in the Logic. While Avicenna's Physics roughly follows the thought of Aristotle's Physics, with its emphasis on natural causes (like form, matter, agent, and end), the nature of motion, and the conditions necessary for motion (like place, time, and continua), the work is hardly derivative. It represents arguably the most brilliant mind of late antiquity grappling with and rethinking the entire tradition of natural philosophy inherited from the Greeks as well as the physical thought of Muslim speculative theologians (the mutakallimün). As such, the Physics is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding Avicenna's complete philosophical system, the history of science, or the history of ideas. The Physics is here fully translated for the first time in any western language and includes a revised edition of the Arabic.' (DJ flap).

'Ibn Sina's famous Canon of Medicine (Qanun fi al-tibb) comes to life in English with this translation. It is a clear and ordered Summa of all the medical knowledge of Ibn Sina's time augmented from his own observations. It is divided into five books. The first contains generalities concerning the human body, sickness, health and general treatment and therapeutics (the only volume translated here). The second contains the materia medica and the pharmacology of herbs. Three methods agreement, difference and concomitant variations are usually regarded as characteristic of modern science. The third book deals with special pathology, studied by organs, or rather by systems. The fourth book opens with the famous treatise on fevers; then follow the treatise on signs, symptoms, diagnostics and prognostics, minor surgery, tumors, wounds, fractures and bites and that on poisons. The fifth book contains the pharmacopoeia. Because the Canon constituted a monumental unity which maintained its authority until modern times it served as a basis for 700 years of medical teaching and practice and is a proven alternative medicine technique.'.

Pencil notes to flyleaf, scant pencil checks to the margins of a few pages, entirely clean and sound otherwise with clean DJ. Out of print and now scarce in trade. 'Avicenna (Ibn Sina, 980-1037) was the most systematic, thorough, and influential of the Islamic philosophers. His Metaphysics (Al-llahiyyat) is the climactic, concluding part of his magnum opus, The Healing (Al-Shifa'). As in his physics and mathematics, the existent is once again Avicenna's main subject in the metaphysics. But while in the physics he examines the existent inasmuch as it is subject to motion and rest, and in the mathematics inasmuch as it is quantified or relates to measure and quantity, in his metaphysics Avicenna deals with the existent as such-not inasmuch as it is either in motion or quantified, but simply inasmuch as it is an existent, without qualification. In addition, Avicenna here seeks to understand the cause of all things, which leads him, as it lead Aristotle before him, to a discussion of God. He develops an emanative theory of divine causation that represents a remarkable synthesis of Neoplatonic, Aristotelian, and Islamic ideas. Within this emanative scheme we encounter some of the basic ideas of Avicenna's religious and political philosophy, including his discussion of the divine attributes, divine provi-dence, the Hereafter, and the ideal, 'virtuous' city with its philosopher-prophet as the recipient and conveyer of the revealed law, a human link between the celestial and the terrestrial worlds.' Ajouter au panierCloth. Etat : Near Fine. None (illustrateur). A smart copy of this facsimile of Ibn Sina's 'Metaphysica sive Prima Philosophia', in Latin. Latin. With two folding plates, one to each end of the text. Collated complete. An enlarged facsimile reprint of the original work with a key to the abbreviations. A translation of this work by Ibn Sina, commonly known in the West as Avicenna, a preeminent philosopher and physician of the Muslim world during the Islamic Golden Age. Sina served in the courts of various Iranian rulers and is often described as the father of early modern medicine. Avicenna wrote extensively on early Islamic philosophy, especially the subjects logic, ethics and metaphysics. His philosophy was of the Peripatetic school derived from Aristotelianism, with most of his works being written in Arabic, then the language of science in the Muslim world. In this study, Avicenna fuses the Aristotelian tradition with the Neo-Platonic idea of emanation, building a new system of metaphysics that includes theology, cosmology and angelology. He also draws on the work of Muslim philosopher Al-Farabi and his argument that the causation of the universe emanated in concentric circles from God through acts of contemplation. Sina's thesis provides a foundation for physics, psychology, prophetology and eschatology. Previously held in the General Theological Seminary Library in New York, in the Rare Book Room. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, very smart with light bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. With age toning to the endpapers and the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Near Fine. book.

With Comin de Trino's woodcut device on titles, as well as at the end of some of the volumes, woodcut initials, and a number of rather fine woodcut headpieces and diagrams in the text; very lightly browned, and a very few leaves with paper-flaws to blank margins; a fine copy, discreetly ruled in ink throughout; bound in early 18th-century red morocco 'a la Duseuil', with triple gilt fillets to outer edges of covers, further triple gilt fillets with gilt floral corner pieces to central panels incorporating the gilt arms of Zacharie Morel, Seigneur de la Brosse et de Saint-Ouen (see Provenance below), gilt spines and gilt, marbled edges; inner dentelles gilt; marbled end-paper; all edges gilt. Provenance: late 16th or early 17th-century inscription in ink 'Di Gir[olam]o Fanti can[oni]co senese' to the title pages of volumes 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, and to the blank verso of the final leaf of Pasio' Index volume, carrying Comin de Trino's beautiful, final printer's device. Girolamo Fanti, registered as a member of the College of Theologians, Siena, for June, 1578 to October, 1579, was canon of the Church of San Lorenzo at Sprenna, in the vicinity of Siena, Tuscany, and is honoured there by a memorial plaque showing his insignia in recognition of the completion of the restoration of the church in 1601. The work was subsequently rebound in red morocco 'à la Duseuil' in the early 18th century for Zacharie Morel, Seigneur de la Brosse et de Saint-Ouen (1652-1737), conseiller in the Parlement de Paris, with his distinctive gilt arms on covers. Named after Augustin du Seuil (or Duseuil, 1673-1746), bookbinder for the Duchess of Berry, and for Louis XV from 1728 until the time of his death, his bindings were much admired both in France and also notably in England for the 'perfection de ses corps d'ouvrage, la délicatesse de sa couvrure, la qualité de ses maroquins, l'élégance et le fini de ses dorures .' (Ernest Roquet (Thoinan), Les relieurs français 1500 1800). The final record of ownership is found in the engraved bookplates to front paste-downs, carrying the interlaced initials 'A Q' and the full name 'Augustin Quenon' (1797-1865), 'juge' (d'instruction au tribunal d'Hazebrouck, Conseiller general du Pas de Calais), and with traces there of a further label, at some time removed. Rarity: Outside Europe OCLC locates one copy in Colombia, at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, and three copies in North America, at University of Southern California, Pennsylvania, and Toronto; German library holdings appear to be of partial sets or individual volumes only, perhaps with the exception of the copy at Göttingen University Library. The bindings a little rubbed and dulled; tails of volumes six and seven a little worn or slightly cracked, but a superlative, complete, set. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY OF AN EXTREMELY RARE COMPLETE SET OF MARCO ANTONIO ZIMARA'S MONUMENTAL EDITION OF ARISTOTLE'S WORKS WITH THE EXTENSIVE COMMENTARIES BY AVERROES, AS WELL AS ON AVICENNA'S CANTICUM DE MEDICINA. THIS COPY WITH THE ADDITIONAL AND EXTREMELY THOROUGH THESAURUS OR INDEX BY ANTONIO POSO, PUBLISHED TWO YEARS LATER AT THE SAME PRESS AND ALMOST ALWAYS ABSENT. Several editions of Aristotle's Works with Averroes' commentaries and edited by the great Italian philosopher Marco Antonio Zimara - whose Tabula dilucidationum in dictis Aristotelis et Averroies (1537) became the principal scholarly tool for searching the works of Aristotle and Averroes - were printed in the mid-sixteenth century, including three by the Giunta Brothers in 1550-1552, 1562, and 1574-1575. The Giunta edition was the most complete of the Latin translations of the works of Aristotle and Averroes and other related texts produced up to that time, and represents the high point of interest in Averroes in northern Italy, especially at the University of Padua. All three Giunta editions differ in make-up and contents, with modifications and additions of text and commentaries. Dag Nikolaus Hasse credits the 1562 Giunta edition as being 'the reference text for several Latin Averroes translations that have yet not received a critical edition' (Success and Suppression. Arabic Sciences and Philosophy in the Renaissaince, p.15). Comin de Trino's edition, an updated edition of the Airstotle-Averroes edition published by the Giunta Brothers, is the rarest of all such Aristotle-Averroes editions. It predates the 1562 Guinta edition by two years and improves upon those preceding and following insofar as it includes Averroes' 'De spermate' and the important Middle Commentary (Talkhi?) to the first seven books of Aristotle's Metaphysics, which appear here for the first time. In adddition, Ibn Rushd's al-Kulliyyat, or Latin 'Colliget', his commentary on Ibn Sina's Urjuza or 'Canticum de medicina', and his short tract 'De theriaca' here form most of the ninth volume of Comin de Trino's edition. Significantly, Antonio Poso's incredibly exhaustive index of over 1000 pages, published by de Trino in the year of the 1562 Giunta edition and rarely found present in the sets recorded, is here bound without a separate title or preliminaries (beginning with leaf 'A', his work forms the final, twelfth, volume of this fine set). Zimara's own commentary on Aristotle and Averroes appears here as well. Ibn Rush (1126-1198), known to the west as Averroës - or simply as the "commentator" due to the influence of his commentary on Aristotle - was an Andalusian polymath and jurist. Abu al-Walid Mu?ammad ibn Ahmad Ibn Rushd was born in Cordova in 1126. He belonged to an influential Andalusian family, famous for its judicial power and for its scholarship in the religious sciences. Thoroughly versed in the traditional Muslim sciences especially exegesis of the Qur?an, Hadith, fiqh (law), philosophy and medicine, Averroës rose to be chief qadi (judge) of Córdoba, an office also held by his grandfather (of the same name) under the Almoravids. After the death of the philosopher Ibn.

Ajouter au panierOne of the most important medical works of the Middle Ages. The work includes all parts of al-Qanun, the most authoritative medical text from the Islamic world, written in Arabic by Ibn Sina (known in the West as Avicenna, ca. 980-1037). The present work contains the Latin translation of Gherardo da Cremona (ca. 1114-1187), which formed the basis of medical training in the Western world from the early 13th- to the mid-17th century. The present Lyon edition appears to be scarce, as we have only been able to find four other copies of it in sales records of the past hundred years.Completed in 1025, the Qanun (also known as the Canon of medicine) is divided into five books, which discuss the basic principles of medicine, the materia medica (listing about 800 drugs), pathology, diseases affecting the body as a whole, and finally the formulary. It was first printed in Latin translation in 1472 and went through many editions. The present work is the second complete Lyon edition. The first was printed in 1498 by Jean Trechsel, and an abridged version appeared in 1508. The present edition has the same contents as the Venice 1505 edition, but with the addition of The life of Avicenna by Franciscus Calphurnius and Annotationes errata et castigationes in Avicenne opera by French physician Symphorien Champier.Ibn Sina was physician to the ruling caliphs. The influence of his Qanun can hardly be overestimated. Translated into Latin in the 12th century, it became a standard textbook of Galenic medicine, influencing many generations of physicians. "One of the most famous medical texts ever written, a complete exposition of Galenism. Ajouter au panier4to. (8), 453 ff. Title-page printed in red within an elaborate woodcut architectural frame; 115 metal-cut decorated initials. Contemporary blind-tooled brown calf with 6 strips of alternating horizontal rolls; remnants of closing ties. One the most important medical works of the Middle Ages, in a contemporary binding. This edition includes the complete Qanun, the most authoritative medical text of the Islamic world, written in Arabic by Ibn Sina (ca. 980-1037), and includes the Latin translation of Gherardo da Cremona (ca. 1114-1187), which formed the basis of medical training in the Western world from the early 13th to the mid-17th century. The present Lyon edition appears to be very scarce: only four other copies are listed in sales records of the past century. - Completed in 1025, al-Qanun (also known as the Canon of Medicine) is divided into five books, which discuss the basic principles of medicine, the materia medica (listing about 800 drugs), pathology, diseases affecting the body as a whole, and finally the formulary. It was first printed in Latin translation in 1472 and went through many editions. The present work is the second complete Lyon edition, the first having been printed in 1498 by Jean Trechsel, and an abridged version appeared in 1508. The present edition has the same contents as that published in Venice in 1505, but in addition comprises the Life of Avicenna by Franciscus Calphurnius and "annotationes, errata et castigationes in Avicennae opera" by the French physician Symphorien Champier. - Ibn Sina, known in the West by his Latinized name Avicenna, was physician to the ruling caliphs. The influence of his Qanun can hardly be overestimated. Translated into Latin in the 12th century, it became a standard textbook of Galenic medicine, influencing many generations of physicians. "One of the most famous medical texts ever written, a complete exposition of Galenism. Neuburger says: 'It stands for the epitome of all precedent development, the final codification of all Graeco-Arabic medicine'. It dominated the medical schools of Europe and Asia for five centuries" (Garrison/M.). - Professionally restored, with the contemporary upper and lower covers laid down; contemporary leather has cracked in places. Ocasional foxing and soiling to margins, 16th-century annotations in the margins of some leaves, upper margin trimmed somewhat short, affecting a few annotations. Brown spots on the first and a few final leaves, a waterstain in the lower inner margin of the last few leaves, wormholes in the upper margin of the last leaf. Lacks the free endpapers and the final blank leaf. Otherwise in good condition. - 17th-century ownership annotation of the Jesuits' College in Fribourg in the upper margin of the title-page ("Collegii S.J. Friburg Buisy 1664"), surrounding a crossed-out annotation ("Ex ."); identical ownership stamps on the verso of title-page and the verso of the final leaf (monogram "VF" within a laurel wreath, and an unidentified university library stamp). - Durling 380. Important 1498 edition of the complete volumes 2 and 3 (of 4), comprising the complete book III, of the greatest monument of Islamic medicine, al-Qanun written in Arabic by Ibn Sina (ca. 980-1037), known in the West as Avicenna, and translated into Latin by Gherardo da Cremona (ca. 1114-1187) as Canon medicinae. This is the first edition edited by Jacques Ponceau, physician to King Charles VIII of France, and the second published outside Italy. It is here preserved in contemporary Renaissance blind- and gold-tooled calf and nearly untrimmed. The complete five books were first printed ca. 1473 and Cremona's translation remained the standard into the 17th century. About ten editions appeared before the present of 1498, but only Adolph Rusch in Strasbourg had published an edition outside Italy, in or soon after 1473. For the present Trechsel edition, Ponceau for the first time added the unpublished commentaries of Jacques Desparts (ca. 1380-1458), physician to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, and new commentaries by the leading scholar Johannes Lascaris (1445-1534), a Greek living in Italy. Trechsel and Ponceau clearly went to great lengths to surpass all earlier editions in scholarship, and the king of France (Charles VIII, just before his death?) granted their edition a five-year privilege (Armstrong, Before copyright, p. 7, notes it as one of the earliest book privileges), but Trechsel died leaving the work unfinished. While Johann Klein completed some parts that Trechsel had already begun, he published only 4 volumes: the complete book I (vol. 1), the present complete book III (vols. 2-3) and the first fen of book IV (vol. 4). So this edition never included books II, V and the rest of book IV. Fortunately book III (well over half of the present edition) can stand independently, covering the pathology of and therapy for all parts of the body systematically "a capite ad calces" (from head to toe), including ailments of the ear, nose and throat, as well as obstetrics. This is the longest and in many respects, the most important book of the al-Qanun.Ibn Sina's encyclopaedic al-Qanun is the most authoritative medical text from the Islamic world and Cremona's Latin translation formed the basis of medical training in the Western world from ca. 1200 to ca. 1650, exerting "perhaps a wider influence in the eastern and western hemispheres than any other Islamic thinker" (Printing and the mind of man). "The 'Qanun' . contains some of the most illuminating thoughts pertaining to distinction of mediastinitis from pleurisy; contagious nature of phthisis; distribution of diseases by water and soil; careful description of skin troubles; of sexual diseases and perversions; of nervous ailments" (Sarton, Introduction to the history of science). "One of the most famous medical texts ever written, a complete exposition of Galenism. Neuburger says: 'It stands for the epitome of all precedent development, the final codification of all Graeco-Arabic medicine'. It dominated the medical schools of Europe and Asia for five centuries" (Garrison & Morton 43).With a few contemporary manuscript annotations, and traces of bookplates removed from the paste-downs. A pencil note on the front paste-down of vol. 2 notes that the set came from the Fritzlar Cathedral Library, parts of which were dispersed in 1724 and in 1803. It was sold by Venator (Cologne), sale 23/24 (1962), lot 15 (illustration plate IV).Volumes 2 (book III, fens 1-12) and 3 (book III, fens 13-22), without volumes 1 (book I: 452 ll.) and 4 (book IV, fen 1: 142 ll.).Both volumes lack the final blank leaf, but are otherwise complete and nearly untrimmed, giving ample margins and preserving an occasional deckle. Some light browning and marginal water stains (mainly towards end of vol. 2), some mostly marginal worming, but still in good condition. Ajouter au panier4to (185 x 226 mm). 96 ff. Arabic manuscript on paper. Black naskh script with important words and phrases picked out in red. With 1 small diagram. 19th century full leather with medallions, spine replaced. Al-Tusi's commentary on one of Ibn Sina's most mature and complex philosophical texts, "Al-Isharat wa al-Tanbihat", comprising "Al-Mantiq", the first half of the work, which is dedicated to the study of logic. The impact of Ibn Sina's (980-1037 CE) writings on philosophy and logic can hardly be overstated. Known as Avicenna in Europe, he was often second only to Aristotle in the education of both Muslim and Christian scholars of the medieval and early modern periods. This was one of his later Arabic works, and a demanding and academic read. - In the commentary "Sharh al-Isharat", Ibn Sina's work is interpreted by Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (1201-74 CE), another great mind of the medieval Muslim world. Al-Tusi is heralded as the inventor of trigonometry, and famously posited astronomical theories which may have influenced the development of the heliocentric theories of Copernicus. - Both authors were polymaths who wrote in Persian and Arabic, and both influenced the course of science and philosophy in the Muslim world and the Latin West. Al-Tusi's commentaries on Ibn Sina combine some of the finest work available in Muslim natural philosophy. - Final two leaves with marginal paper repairs; a few catchwords trimmed closely. - Cf.
