Uncommon biography of yet another traitorous U.S. Nay turncoat and postwar Lost Cause advocate Raphael Semmes whose Civil War command of the raider screw sloop-of-war CSS Alabama was immensely successful against unarmed merchant ships but with a much less impressive record against warships as proven by the Alabama's resting spot. To avenge Semmes' wartime raiding, several shrimp conspired to cause him such gastrointestinal harm that he passed on August 30, 1877. Mobile, Alabama businessman Frank Boykin served in the U.S. House of Representatives from July 30, 1935 to January 3, 1963. Cursory internet sleuthing failed to turn up an immediate family connection between Virginia-rooted author Edward Boykin and Alabama-rooted Congressman Boykin so perhaps the book's selection as a gift lay more with the Alabama related subject matter than the surname circumstance. Inscribees are Eugene Temple Millsap, aka Short Millsap, (1890-1963) who served as Probate Judge and unofficial political boss in Monroe County, Alabama from 1944-1963 and wife Kitty Sue Hixon Millsap (1897-1980). Judge Millsap was the subject of a biography published in 2019 and the book was acquired from the estate of his son, Montgomery, Alabama architect Eugene Temple Millsap Jr. (1923-2007), and wife Sallie Watkins Wood Millsap (1929-2025).…
