We see how he handled the humiliations inflicted on him as a black soldier traveling in the Deep South and the unnerving challenges be faced as a battalion commander in Korea, where the army guarding the border with North Korea was plagued by drugs, drinking, a lack of discipline, and racial tension. Colin Powell, moving easily between the Army and high positions in both Republican and Democratic administrations has a unique perspective. As an active soldier, he has experienced the sharp end of political decisions in Washington. As an advice to three Presidents, he has seen how policy is shaped and he has shaped it himself. It was Powell whom President Reagan summoned to the White House to help National Security Advisor Frank Carlucci clean up the mess after the Iran-contra debacle. It was Powell whom President Clinton called back from private life to accompany forever President Carter on his eve-of-war mission to Haiti. Haiti was a consummation of Powell's translation from soldier to statement and popular leader. Not since Dwight Eisenhower has a figure in public life been held in such universal esteem or had so few negatives. Powell gives us behind-the-scenes portraits of Presidents Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, of Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf, and many others. This is a book of political excitement and disclosure, but it is much more. It is a life well lived and well told. It is also a view from the mountaintop of the political landscape of America. Ricks is author of four nonfiction books: Fiasco: The American Military Adventure In Iraq, The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008, The Generals: American Military Command from World War II to Today, and Making the Corps. The main points of this hard-hitting indictment of the Iraq war have been made before, but seldom with such compelling specificity. In dovetailing critiques of the civilian and military leadership, Washington Post Pentagon correspondent Ricks (Making the Corps) contends that, under Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and Feith, the Pentagon concocted "the worst war plan in American history," with insufficient troops and no thought for the invasion's aftermath. Thus, an under-manned, unprepared U.S. military stood by as chaos and insurgency took root, then responded with heavy-handed tactics that brutalized and alienated Iraqis. Based on extensive interviews with American soldiers and officers as well as firsthand reportage, Ricks's detailed, unsparing account of the occupation paints a woeful panorama of reckless firepower, mass arrests, humiliating home invasions, hostage-taking and abuse of detainees. Etat : Very Good. A single advertising leaflet issued by Harper & Brothers, New York, titled 'Valuable and Interesting Works for Public and Private Libraries.' The sheet lists newly available and standard works from Harper's catalogue, including notable titles by Griffis (Japan), Reclus (Earth and Ocean), Hildreth (United States…), Van-Lennep (Bible Lands), and works on pottery, caricature, exploration, and American history. These ephemeral inserts were placed loosely or sewn into Harper books during the early 1880s to promote the firm's broader publishing program. The sheet is printed in black with red vertical type along the left margin and paginated internally as pages 24, indicating it was extracted from a larger multi-page catalogue. Typography and listed publication dates point to production between 1883 and 1885. Very Good. Light age-toning to margins with faint handling wear; no tears or loss. Clean, well-preserved example with strong impression and fully legible text. Harper & Brothers routinely issued multi-page catalogues for insertion into their clothbound books beginning in the 1870s. These were replaced frequently, making specific printings difficult to date; however, cross-referencing publication dates of listed titles is the accepted bibliographic method.
