Paperback. Etat : Near Fine. 2nd. x, 404 pages, illustrations; 24 cm. Updated and Expanded Edition. Tight, clean copy. Browning. Review copy, with publisher's material laid in. *** "Herblock: A Cartoonist's Life tells of the remarkable career that has spanned the era from Roosevelt to Clinton. Herb Block opposed isolationism before World War II; warned of nuclear hazards in the '40s; opposed McCarthyism in the '50s and racism in the '50s and '60s; and zeroed in on Watergate in the '70s and Iran-contra and other Reagan-Bush scandals in the '80s. He coined the word 'McCarthyism' and describes that time of fear. He also writes engagingly about personal incidents and meetings with public figures. Herbert Block has been using the pen name 'Herblock' since the age of thirteen, when he started contributing quips and comments to a humor column in the Chicago Tribune and apprenticed himself to the columnist. He dropped out of college to take his first cartooning job with the Chicago Daily News at age 19. In 1946, after a wartime stint in the Army, he moved to The Washington Post - then a comparatively small paper. He is the only cartoonist to win the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for contributions to the cause of freedom of speech and the press, the National Press Club Fourth Estate Award and the Franklin Roosevelt Freedom Medal. He is also the only living cartoonist whose work is in the National Gallery of Art." - Publisher. Size: 8vo.…

Ajouter au panierHard Cover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Lacks Sandglass. Includes slipcase. A near fine copy in a very good slipcase. Slipcase edges rubbed. Spine very lightly faded. 1960 Hard Cover. xii, 395 pp. Introduction by Norman H. Strouse. Illustrated by Lynton Lamb. Tono-Bungay is very possibly H. G. Wells' finest novel, bringing together so many strands of his work: that of the novelist, the scientific romancer, the humorist, the historian, and the prophet-like sociologist. It was published in 1909, and although Wells was disappointed by its poor sales, Arnold Bennett praised it thus: "When with the thrill of emotion that a great work communicates I finished reading Tono-Bungay, I was filled with a holy joy because Wells had stirred up the dregs again and more violently than ever. Human nature - you get it pretty complete in Tono-Bungay." George Ponderevo is the novel's first person narrator, his mother the housekeeper of Bladesover House, a great country house in Sussex, that Wells uses throughout the novel to embody the decline of England, its certainties and its values. Tono-Bungay is Dickensian in stature, broad in its social panorama, taking George from childhood in the 1860s, to Chatham in Kent, to teeming London, to Africa and France: His life unfolds warts and all, as he rubs shoulders with every class, goes to live with his aunt and uncle, a Wimblehurst chemist, who goes on to invent a patent medicine of dubious efficacy, that he names, for no obvious reason, Tono-Bungay. George goes up to London to study, falls in love, goes to work for his increasingly wealthy uncle, abandons academia, marries, returns to the study of aeronautics (theory and practice), eventually attempting to dig the crumbling family business out of a very deep hole, by prospecting illegally for a nastily radioactive substance called quap on Mordet Island, and even attempting a moonlit flit in the Lord Roberts beta flying machine. George Ponderevo is a mass of contradictions, seeking truth in science, truth in romance, mourning the passing of old England, chasing the new and the novel. …

Large Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Jacket edges rubbed with creases along front corners. 2008 Large Hardcover. xii, 494 pp. A biography by three well-known Lincoln biographers, with an introduction by presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin (author of A Team of Rivals) and a foreword by David Herbert Donald, who also wrote an authoritative biography of Abraham Lincoln. 'An extensively researched, lavishly illustrated consideration of the myths, memories, and questions that gathered around our most beloved - and most enigmatic - president in the years between his assassination and the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial in 1922. Availing themselves of a vast collection of both published and never-before-seen materials, the authors - the fourth and fifth generations of a family of Lincoln scholars - bring into focus the posthumous portrait of Lincoln that took hold in the American imagination. Told through the voices of those who knew the man - Northerners and Southerners, blacks and whites, neighbors and family members, adversaries and colleagues - Looking for Lincoln charts the dramatic epilogue to Lincoln's extraordinary life. During these years, as Americans struggled to understand their loss and rebuild their country, Lincoln's legacy was still hotly debated. The authors take us through the immediate aftermath of the assassination; the private memories of those closest to the slain president; the difficult period between 1876 and 1908, when a tired nation turned its back on the former slaves and betrayed Lincoln's teachings; and the early years of the twentieth century when Lincoln's popularity soared as African Americans fought to reclaim the ideals he espoused. Looking for Lincoln will deeply enhance our understanding of the statesman and his legacy, at a moment when the timeless example of his leadership is more crucial than ever.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. In this work Koestler cuts through the sterile distinction between 'sciences' and 'humanities' to bring to life the whole history of cosmology from the Babylonians to Newton. He shows how the tragic split between science and religion arose and how, in, particular, the modern world-view replaced the medieval world-view in the scientific revolution of the 17th century. He also provides vivid and judicious pen-portraits of a string of great scientists and makes clear the role that political bias and unconscious prejudice played in their creativity. Notes, Index. 635p.…
