The 27th Division, composed of the various National Guard units throughout the state, under the command of Maj.-Gen. John F. O'Ryan, fought valiantly and irresistibly. The greatest single feat credited to the New York division was the breaking of the Hindenburg line, the 'impregnable line' of fortifications which the Germans had erected as a last line of defense."
