P…rose Pieces is a collection covering over sixty years of writing. As James Kraft writes in his introduction, "One finds throughout these essays Bynner's special interests: his pleasure in the expression of human character, especially when it shows the minority viewpoint; his commitment to democracy and humor - concepts he considered related; and his affinity for Mexico and China as societies that offered alternative ways of looking at the world." There is an interview with Henry James, written in 1905; a visit with George Meredith; essays on D. H. Lawrence, Edna Millay, Bertha Kalich, Ezra Pound, and Robinson Jeffers; accounts of life in the Southwest and of the Pueblo Indians reminiscences, reviews, and public letters. This collection represents the many aspects of a long and varied career spanning the transition from Gilded Age to Nuclear Age. Poet, critic, biographer, playwright, translator from the Chinese, editor, and man of letters, Witter Bynner deserves to be better known to contemporary readers. "He was not," writes James Kraft in his introduction to this volume, "except for a brief period in the late teens and the twenties, a member of our literary establishment-in fact, he later represented a movement away from the mainstream.
