Iris was a notorious forger, and it is noted that Yeats died long before his "unpublished preface" was attached to this volume.

Sharmel Iris was an Italian-American immigrant (he came to the US aged three), who had dreams of being a famous poet, and assumed multiple fake identities and committed forgeries in order to further his literary career. He would often write letters under fake identities, addressed to major publishers, extolling the virtues of Sharmel Iris's work. Iris donated his archive to the Newberry Library in 1966.
