The defence and security status of the Gulf region is facing a dilemma between the maintenance of regional security and the preservation of domestic security interests. The consequences for the Gulf and the greater Middle East are addressed in this edited volume, with contributions from practitioners as well as academics. For a variety of contributing factors, the defence and security status of the Gulf region is facing a dilemma between the maintenance of regional security and the preservation of domestic security interests. This dilemma stems from the perceived decline of U.S. influence and lingering consequences of the Arab Spring movements. Divisions and armed conflicts, both within the Gulf itself and the surrounding region, are a result of this changing political order and the ascension of many of the Gulf states on the international scene. These evolving dynamics will set in motion various defence and security consequences for the Gulf and the greater Middle East which are addressed in this edited volume. With contributions from practitioners as well as academics, this book will be a vital resource for both researchers and policymakers.

Ajouter au panierTaschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware -This book aims to understand the relationship between GCC countries respondents¿ consumption of different news media and their perception of news issues. The book examines respondents¿ news consumption habits and their motives for the choices they make. It fills the current gap in media scholarship concerning Arab media and how it affects the Arab public. It is clear that the arrival of satellite TV news channels has helped to improve human rights, press freedom and democracy throughout the region. Arabic news TV services have emerged as the leading news resource and source of information for respondents in the three Arab Gulf States. Al Jazeera and BBC (Arabic) TV were rated as highly credible sources. The study suggests that Arab audiences seek information from media they deem to be reliable and credible to gratify their need for news information.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 232 pp. Englisch.

Utilizing arguments of practical geopolitical reasoning, Özgür Pala and Khaled Al-Jaber situate their analysis of evolving relations in the contexts of Ottoman-British geopolitical rivalry in the Persian Gulf, the Turkish Republic's fluctuating relations with the Middle East until the 2000s, the AKP governments' opening to the region and finally the Arab Spring and its aftermath. Contextualizing the trajectory of Turkish-Qatari relations within the larger Middle East and the Gulf Arab region, the authors argue that material interests and identity politics have generally determined relations until the turn of the millennium. Under Erdogan and Sheikh Hamad's assertive leadership and ambitious foreign policy, Turkey and Qatar came to witness various foreign policy convergences on critically important regional issues. Pala and Al-Jaber argue that these convergences, coupled with their geopolitical and security goals, facilitated a political alignment between Ankara and Doha throughout the Arab Spring. They argue that despite facing major geopolitical setbacks, Turkey and Qatar were able to chart a much deeper cooperation, which later evolved into a strategic partnership in various areas.
