Jacob Schumer was born in 1869 in Kamionka Strumilowa, Galicia, Austria-Hungary (now Kamianka-Buzka, Ukraine). He was educated in Vienna as a Doctor of Medicine (1894), after which he married in Birmingham to Matilda Josephine Myers (1876-1971), resided in Vöslau, Austria (1900), London (1902), and Johannesburg, South Africa (about 1903-1907) before settling in Hendon, Middlesex (1911-1932). He was a well-known chess problem composer, and also a strong player, winning the Mocatta Cup (1911) and sharing 5th place in the British Chess Championship in Chester (1914). For a period he was the chess editor of The Westminster Gazette, and chess correspondent for London's News Chronicle. His book Chesslets appeared in 1928.
