Bel exemplaire 12mo, 19th cent. Gilt calf ; joints sl. Worn, very good copy Raveneau de Lussan, a young Frenchman who wished to see the world, sailed from France for San Domingue in 1679. His indebtedness led him to join the buccaneers in search of his fortune ; France and Spain were at war, and French buccaneers found both wealth and protection while harassing the Spain. By his own reckoning, Raveneau de Lussan was very devout, never allowing his crew to molest priests or nuns, or to sack churches. After taking a Spanish town, he and his men would attend Mass before commencing to loot. He also recounts his love affair with a Spanish widow. Raveneau spent several months raiding in the West-Indies, and several years raiding the Pacific coast between Guatemala and Chile. He details both the romantic and the bleak sides of the buccaneering profession, interwoven with colourful descriptions of the natives of the regions and a clear picture of the Spanish colonies on the Pacific. Raveneau de Lussan s journal was first published in Paris in 1689. Other French editions were issued in 1705.

12mo. [22], 215pp. 2 engraved plates, folding printed leaf after p. 124. Paris: Thomas Jolly, 1666. 152 x 84 mm. Mottled calf, gilt spine ca. 1666, hinges cracked, extremities and corners worn. Minor foxing but very good. Former owner's note on the verso of the front free endpaper. First Edition of the first book on the detection of forged documents, with the imprint dated 1666 and privilege dated 8 April 1666. The Bibliothèque nationale de France has a unique copy of Raveneau's work with title-page dated 1665. According to Anne Sauvy, Livres saisis à Paris entre 1678 and 1701 (1972) No. 19, the 1665 edition bears a privilege dated July 1665. In that copy is a note indicating that this privilege was obtained improperly. Presumably Raveneau had to delay publication until he obtained an accepted privilege; the privilege in the 1666 edition is dated April 8, 1666. This 1666 edition includes a florid dedication to French magistrate Guillaume Ier de Lamoignon, marquis de Basville, who was first president of the Parliament of Paris. The dedication is prominently featured on the title page. Raveneau, a professional calligrapher and scrivener, described here the various methods of counterfeiting documents and signatures, articulating the important legal principle that a signature should be considered false if it conforms too closely to a known example. The French authorities suppressed publication of the Traité, believing that the information it contained was as useful to forgers as it was to those detecting forgeries, and it is possible that Raveneau may have been imprisoned for writing the book . The 1666 edition is very rare on the market. Further editions were published in Luxembourg in 1673, and in Paris (presumably after the ban had been lifted) in 1691. This copy contains an old inscription facing the title page, probably from the 19th century, that may be translated, "This book was prohibited for the reason that it gave forgers the means to falsify, fake or alter writings, and has become excessively rare." .

Ajouter au panierSecond and earliest feasibly obtainable edition, the Fletcher de Saltoun copy, of the first manual on the detection of forged documents. A pioneering work in the scientific study of handwriting, it teaches how to identify different types of fakes, discusses penmanship, paper, and erasures, and provides a recipe for an invisible ink. The treatise was published in Paris the year before "chez l'Auteur", with a privilege dated July 1665. No copies of the first edition are traced in auction records, and only one is recorded in libraries worldwide, in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Sauvy notes that the BNF copy bears a privilege dated July 1665 and a manuscript note indicating that such privilege had been obtained improperly. Presumably, Raveneau (died c.1683 had to delay publication until he secured a legitimate privilege du Roy, which is included in this second edition and dated April 1666. Raveneau was a maître écrivain and forensic writing expert. Traité des inscriptions is a "pivotal work - the one which, until recent years and before the use of laboratory methods, remained the most comprehensive, the most insightful, and the model to follow. [Raveneau] knows how to determine whether handwriting is old or freshly done, whether certain lines or words were added, whether there was any addition, subtraction, or replacement of pages, alterations, or substitution of one number for another" (trans from Locard, p. 11). Parisian authorities suppressed the work, believing its contents would be as valuable to forgers as to those attempting to detect forgeries. Despite this, it was reprinted in 1673 and 1691. In 1682, Raveneau was arrested, tried, and sentenced to life imprisonment - an outcome that Sauvy suggests was a result of him exploiting his expertise for personal gain. Provenance: Andrew Fletcher (1653-1716), the Scottish Enlightenment philosopher, with his signature on the rear pastedown. He gained a reputation as a patriot for his opposition to union with England. His library was the largest private collection of books in Scotland at the turn of the 18th century. He spoke Italian and travelled extensively across Europe (sometimes in political exile), including to the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Germany. It was most likely on these travels that Fletcher acquired the greater part of his library. Sauvy 19. Duodecimo (145 x 85 mm). With 2 engraved plates (an elaborate monogram and the coat of arms of dedicatee Guillaume de Lamoignon), folding letterpress table. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with raised bands, compartments lettered and tooled in gilt, gilt foliate roll to board edges, edges sprinkled red. Old library labels on spine, near-contemporary inscription at foot of rear pastedown. Spine ends and corners worn, joints cracked, but firm, rear pastedown sometime scratched to remove inscription, contents lightly toned, occasional marginal foxing. A very good copy.
