Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Translated by Mark Treharne From Belleville to Passy, from Montmartre to La-Butte-aux-Cailles, from Antony to Saint-Ouen - Jacques Reda is a traveller in his own city of Paris. In the tradition of Baudelaire and Rimbaud, he is a nervous, rather unleisurely flaneur, unsettling and subverting preconceived ideas about travel and home. The Ruins of Paris echoes with the footsteps and the words of a wanderer by turns gloomy, curious, troubled, elated, angry, tender and confused (and sometimes all these things at once). We are led through the arrondissements and suburbs of Paris and beyond in a journey that moves to the rhythm of walking, of trains, to the hopeful tempo of upbeat jazz. Reda the wanderer is forever on the move: he constantly sets off, stops, begins afresh, treasuring movement itself while journeying from place to place. Journeys that are at once exhilarating and familiar, journeys that mirror life itself and a world that ceaselessly rises anew from its own ruins. Jacques Reda's book is both a poetic meditation on Paris and a haunting companion to its views and moods. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. Jacques Reda chooses the height of the plum-picking season to revisit - on an old motorbike - his home town in Lorraine, north-eastern France. The fragrant allure of mirabelles introduces a colourful mix of old acquaintances renewed in these five days and vividly remembered places that have shaped a lifetime's writing. With its reflections, often whimsical, on the passing of the years, and its varied motifs - the plums, the provincial stillness, the toy soldiers of his childhood, 'the astonishing existence of others' first discovered as a love-struck schoolboy - this has few rivals as a portrayal of town life in la France profonde, written with tenderness and humour. A translated memoir, in which the author chooses the height of the mirabelle season in Lorraine for a long-delayed visit to his home town, Luneville. It presents a series of impressions, encounters and musings that takes us from Friday Evening to Tuesday Morning, through a remembered topography that has largely shaped a lifetime's writing. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The first English selection of Jacques Reda's poems draws on his earliest major collections, widely regarded as among his finest: 'Amen', awarded the Priz Max Jacob, 1968; 'Recitatif', 1970; and 'La Tourne', 1975. These were a formative influence on the 'new lyricism' that was to change the direction of French poetry in the 1980s. With an eye for detail and drama, his poems roam from day-to-day Paris to other times and places, striking a wry, pensive note that is at once personal and universal. They will appeal to readers who share Reda's belief that poetry lives through its rhythm, or 'better still, le swing' (he is a respected jazz critic). The music is admirably captured in Jennie Feldman's translations. A translation of French poems drawn from the poet's earliest major collections.
