The author negotiated the 1700 treaty that occasioned the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14), whereby Louis XIV's grandson, Philippe, duc d'Anjou was named heir to the Spanish throne by the dying Charles II of Spain. He was also the leading French diplomat at the series of international conferences that resulted in the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) and the Treaty of Rastatt (1714). The work is divided into four sections, the first devoted to the negotiations for the Spanish Succession, the second to negotiations with Holland, the third to negotiations with England, and the fourth to negotiations for the Treaty of Utrecht, by which France ceded to England all claim to the Hudson's Bay Territory, Acadia, St. Kitts, and Newfoundland.
