The boards show some marks commensurate with age… and handling over the last 80+ years but are generally clean. There is some browning to the top edges of the boards. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. ***In a very good dustwrapper, illustrated by Mervyn Peake, with red and black titles, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 6s. net. The dustwrapper is very fragile and has narrow foldover flaps (to conform with wartime paper restrictions). The dustwrapper is complete, with just some minor wear to the top and tail of the spine. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and rubbed. Please note there are two closed tears to the centre of the spine but no loss (please see scans). The first edition, first impression.In the original price-clipped dust wrapper.'The Adventures of the Young Soldier…in Search of the Better World' is exactly as the title describes, the plot following a soldier and he sets out on a pilgrimage to discover the better world he had been promised after the War.Illustrated with a frontispiece, and in-text illustrations throughout by Mervyn Peake. Peake was an English author and illustrator who is best known today for his 'Gormenghast' books. He also illustrated editions of 'Hunting of the Snark', 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner', 'Brothers Grimm', 'Treasure Island', and 'Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'.By C. E. M. Joad, a philosopher who popularised the science. In the original publisher's cloth binding, in the original price-clipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. A few minor marks to the boards. Gift inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Lacking the rear endpaper. Dust wrapper is edge worn with chips and small tears, chipping heavier to the head and tail of the spine. Amateur repairs to the reverse of the wraps.
