Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Penguin New Writing No. 38 with Early Painting by Francis Bacon. Also Contains Work by Wyndham Lewis, Saul Bellow, Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch, 1949 Vintage Paperback. This is "The Penguin New Writing", No. 38, published in 1949. It's a great issue with selections from contemporary literary lions, and luminaries from the world of Art. Of special interest in this issue is a reproduction of an early painting by Francis Bacon, (reproduced in black-and-white), included in the "Paintings from Recent Exhibitions" section. The painting titled "Head" is a very early effort by Bacon, possibly the first in the series of "Heads", and one sees his distinctive style coalescing in this unsettling picture. It is significant as a marker in Bacon's career. (See picture provided). This inclusion is what elevates the book's value. Other artists whose works are depicted are Edward Burra, Massimo Campigli, Keith Vaughan, Wyndham Lewis, Robert Colquhoun, and Robert McBryde. In the pictorial section there are also photographic stills from stage productions of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon, including plays produced by Anthony Quayle and John Gielgud. there are also costume designs shown by James Bailey and Edward Carrick. This issue is also significant for its inclusions from the literary front : there are selections from Edith Sitwell, Denton Welch and Saul Bellow, as well as many others. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the growth of the religious epic before the great work of John Milton, Paradise Lost, with a specific focus on the impact of Abraham Cowley's Davideis. The author traces the evolution of the religious epic form, examining earlier works like Bishop Bale's Gods Promises, Hans Sachs' plays, and the influential Divine Weeks and Works of Guillaume de Saluste Du Bartas. The book explores the influence of these predecessors on Cowley's Davideis, analyzing its themes, characters, and style within the broader context of 17th-century religious poetry. Ultimately, this study sheds light on the development of a significant literary genre and the role of Cowley's epic in shaping its trajectory. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
