His second play, The Birthday Party, closed after eight performances, but was enthusiastically reviewed by critic Harold Hobson. His early works were described by critics as "comedy of menace". Later plays such as No Man's Land (1975) and Betrayal (1978) became known as "memory plays". He appeared as an actor in productions of his own work on radio and film. He also undertook a number of roles in works by other writers. He directed nearly 50 productions for stage, theatre and screen. Pinter received over 50 awards, prizes, and other honours, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2005 and the French Légion d'honneur in 2007. " (from Wikipedia).

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Pinter, Harold (illustrateur). 6" x 9" Hardcover. 368 pages. Harold Pinter was one of the most prolific British authors, with a writing career of fifty-eight years. This bibliographical history provides a comprehensive account of the print-published writings and texts in other media, which he has wholly or partly authored, and will be a valuable resource for all who have a scholarly interest in modern British literature. Preeminently an oustanding playwright, a creator of texts in dramatic form for live theatre, radio, television or cinema, Pinter also composed a significant body of poetry, some short stories, a novel, and a large number of non-fictional prose writings. Interviews, recorded in print and other media, interview-based articles and other texts are documented here, as are texts generated from Pinter's wide-ranging interest in literary projects, human rights and political causes, with forewords to books, short notes, jointly authored letters, signatures to petitions, declarations and other material.

Softcover/VG; sound w/surface wear to front. Gift inscription to title page. 1st & 2nd plays from Harold Pinter (1930 - 2008), son of a Jewish tailor, outstanding British playwright, screenwriter, director, actor, & 2005 Nobel Prize winner. Both plays date to 1957, presented 1958 & supported by production photos, and both distinguished for use of understatement, small talk, reticence, & even silence to convey a character's thought. 120 pges: Play 1, The Birthday Party, in which Stanley Webber, sole tenant of a seaside boarding house, whose life is disrupted by the sudden arrival of Goldberg & McCann, coinciding w/Stanley's birthday. The two throw him a birthday party, and then by aggressive interrogation prove Stanley has suffered a nervous breakdown, and abduct him; and Play 2, The Room (first presented 1957, possibly completed in 4 days!), takes place a room of an rundown "bed & breakfast" rooming house run by middle-aged Mr. Kidd, occupied by Rose & Bert Hudd (who may not be married). Drama opens at breakfast --- Rose's lengthy, meandering monologue is interrupted by arrival of Mr. Kidd inquiring when Bert is planning to move out. Bert remains silent & drives off in his van (truck driver?) Out w/the garbage, Rose meets Mr. & Mrs. Sands, who are seeking lodgings & have a meeting w/Mr. Kidd; she brings them in. Suddenly, Riley, a blind black man, long awaiting in the basement, appears w/a message for Rose from her "father". The play ends violently. Bert returns as Rose is stroking Riley's face --- he delivers a lengthy, sexually-suggestive monologue (his first utterance in the play) on what it is to drive a van, all the while referring to it as if it were a woman before beating Riley lifeless as Rose cries in agony, "Can't see. I can't see. I can't see". Strong copy in a tired softcover. .
