One further step: Barth does not ask only, as in 1938, by what right it is possible to speak to the State. He also in concerned about what it is possible to say. He discovers that the criteria of the freedom of religious exercise, the refusal of deification of the State, and necessary opposition to the anti-State, are not sufficient. The bridge would have been easy to build, had Barth been willing to call upon natural theology, which discerns in the spirit of every man certain common understandings, independent both of the subjective faith of the individual and of his objective knowledge of Jesus Christ. This bridge Barth must reject in the name of the Christological concentration which dominates his entire work. In the place of this bridge he proposes a method of "analogy." .
