Full title reads: 'Chronicles of the Crusades, being Contemporary Narratives of the Crusade of Richard Coeur de Lion by Richard of Devizes and Geoffrey de Vinsauf; and of the Crusade of Saint Louis". Hardcover, full leather binding ornately decorated with gilt to edges and spine. Unfortunately, both front and rear boards are detached though present. Exterior spine shows chipping at top and bottom as well as a spot near the center. Front and rear end page and pastedowns are marbled. Rear pastedown contains a smaller bookplate bearing a crest and stating this was from Cardiff Castle and front pastedown has a large attractive bookplate showing the owner as Johannes Patricius Crichton Stuart Marchio de Bute. The book condition is graded as poor because both boards are detached and if not for this book would be a strong VG to VG plus. No handwriting is present, interior binding is strong and text pages are tight. Pages are toned due to age and some minor foxing is present. The bookplates are what make this a unique item.

Plomer, Some Private Presses of the Nineteenth Century (The Library, pgs. 407-08, 1900). From a printing of 230 copies. Contains three engraved plates (one folding), including frontispiece in vol. I, three engraved maps (two of which are folding). Sir Walter Scott's library at Abbotsford held a copy and he cites to it in his Essay on Chivalry, (Prose Works, vol. 6, pgs. 95-96). 4to. 2 volumes. [11], [1]-426pp.; [3], [v]-vii, [1]-328pp. Scarce in commerce. One Hundred Books Since 1471, pg. 17; Lowndes 1224; Allibone, pg. 969; Dibdin, Bibliomania, pg. 647. Paper with watermark of noted papermaker "J. Whatman 1801". Very good in contemporary diced calf, gilt ruled, rebacked with original backstrip laid down but ends chipped with loss, corners rubbed, the text generally clean but with foxed plates, and with prior owner signature to half titles.

Printed in red and black, with four- and five-line initials throughout in red and pale blue, designed by Alfred J. Fairbank. The first text page, starting with three sizes of Poliphilus capitals printed in red, and with the shield of St. Louis in jewel-like blue and yellow at the foot, is considered one of the most beautiful openings of the Press. Illustrated with seventeen armorial shields engraved in wood by Reynolds Stone, and hand-colored in brilliant hues. Maps drawn by Berthold Wolpe and lettered by Fairbank, and genealogical tables in red and black. Gwen and Daisy Davies, the Welsh sisters who owned the Gregynog Press, employed four different controllers during the lifetime of the Press. James Wardrop, who came to them from the Victoria and Albert Museum, was responsible for bringing together the artists whose collaboration resulted in the sumptuous production of The History of Saint Louis. The book was the highlight of Wardrop's tenure at Gregynog, and is one of the Press' finest achievements. Bound in original full brown morocco with the coat-of-arms of St. Louis stamped in gold on the front cover. Spine in six compartments, with raised bands and gilt titling. Minimal shelfwear, and a couple of light rubs to spine bands, else fine. T.e.g. (Harrop 37).
