Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book provides a rare glimpse into the mind of Chief Justice John Marshall, revealing his true opinions on the controversial topic of Freemasonry. Through the examination of Marshall's letters and writings, the author uncovers Marshall's shift from early support of the organization to his later realization of its dangerous potential. Exploring the historical context of Freemasonry's rise and fall in popularity, the book delves into the oaths, rituals, and practices that made the organization so alluring to some and so repugnant to others. Drawing on historical evidence, including the infamous murder of William Morgan, the author sheds light on the dark underbelly of Freemasonry and its capacity for secrecy and violence. Ultimately, this book contributes to our understanding of the complex relationship between secret societies, individual conscience, and the rule of law. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Occasional pencil marks throughout. In the nineteenth century, there was public fear of secret societies such as the Freemasons and Odd Fellows. Public prejudice was fanned by ex-Masons and various religious leaders who preached the "evils" of fraternal organizations with secret oaths and initiations, despite the fact that founding fathers such as George Washington had been Freemasons. An Anti-Masonic party was formed and several Anti-Masons, such as Joseph Ritner, were elected to prominent positions. Ritner, in fact, became the eighth governor of Pennsylvania and did have positive accomplishments, including speaking out against slavery. Eventually the public tired of the tirade against Freemasonry but not before numerous pamphlets such as the ones collected in this volume were published. Note bookplate designed by James Jervis Blomfield (1879-1951), Canadian artist and designer best known for his design of the coat of arms of Vancouver.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Reputation is a public battleground. When rumours linked George Washington to secret societies, Americans fought over more than a name: they fought over the meaning of the Republic.Vindication Of General Washington From The Stigma Of Adherence To Secret Societies is a sharp historical political pamphlet by Joseph Ritner, written amid nineteenth century America's storms of suspicion and reform. It belongs to the heated print culture of nineteenth century America, when accusations of conspiracy could sway elections and tarnish legacies in a heartbeat. Presented here as the complete pamphlet text, it takes aim at the charge that Washington stood with hidden fraternities, and it reveals how freemasonry and founding fathers became a lightning rod for partisan feeling. As an anti-masonic political argument, it shows the tactics of persuasion, evidence, and moral appeal that fuelled the era's campaigns, making it an illuminating window on secret societies in politics and the wider anti-masonic movement history. Readers interested in the early american republic will find a compact, forceful document to read for narrative drive or to mine as an american history research text. For collectors and students alike, this work holds lasting value as a freemasonry studies reference and a primary text, perfect for creating an annotated primary source edition with your own notes. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike, for shelves, study, and gifting.…
