Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. 2nd Edition. Second UK edition, second impression. xxxvi, 240pp. Blue cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on the spine. 8vo. Cloth a little worn, rubbed and rounded on corners and spine ends, slightly rippled on a slightly sunned spine. Text block edges a little dust darkened. Lengthy presentation inscription, dated 1930, elegantly inked on front free endpaper else internally neat, clean, bright and tight. A lovely early edition of Carl Jung's seminal work. The book illustrates the divergence between Jung and Freud on the nature of libido. Its publication led to a breakdown in the relationship between the two eminent men. First published in English in 1916, this copy is a second printing of the second UK edition, from the same publisher and using the same translation by Beatrice Hinkle (the original work having been published in German in 1912). Jung was later to thoroughly revise the text which was later, in the 1950s, published in English under the title Symbols of Transformation.

The spine is very subtly sunned, and the cloth at the spine ends is a little frayed. "In this work he [Jung] has plunged boldly into the treacherous sea of mythology and folklore, the productions of the ancient mind and that of the common people, and turned upon this vast material the same scientific and painstaking method of psychologic analysis that is applied to the modern mind, in order to reveal the common bond of desire and longing which unites all humanity, and thus bridge the gaps presumed to exist between ancient and widely separated peoples and those of our modern time." - Translator's Note.
