Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First American Edition. Illustrated with 6 photographs and 4 line drawings. This book was previously owned by J.T. Fraser who is 'acknowledged to be the world's foremost authority on the interdisciplinary, integrated study of time.'-- International Society for the Study of Time. I purchased a number of his books some years ago in Westport, Connecticut where Dr. Fraser lived. This book has his bookplate on the inside front cover. Moreover, he penciled some notes along with some underlining and parenthetical lines (there is, as well, a slip of paper with some penciled words and phrases that I have left between pages 68 and 69). 'Julius Thomas Frazer made important scholarly contributions to the interdisciplinary Study of Time' and his work has strongly influenced thinking about the nature of time across the disciplines from physics to sociology, biology to comparative religion. He was a seminal figure in the general interdisciplinary study of temporality.' Dr. Fraser was also a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Time. You can read a lot more about him in his Wikipedia profile. You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are very clean, although there is this slight bit of darkening on the front cover in few spots that can be seen if you hold it under a light. The silver lettering on the front and spine is nicely bright. There is a little bit of the usual crinkling at the spine ends. The cover edges are in very good shape. The covers corners have tiny spots of light rub-through. The page edges look very good, just a few little spots. The pages are tightly bound and the covers are tightly bound. The interior of the book is in nice shape. The pages are very clean, I saw only a few with a minor spot or two. The pages are also bright, not toned. I didn't find any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners, no placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. The only writing his penciling. The only attachment is Dr. Fraser's bookplate. However, he had cut out part of the front and rear flaps of the jacket and glued one onto the rear side of the blank rear end paper and one onto the rear inside cover. That has left an amber colored discoloration on both. They are smooth and there is no scuffing on either. The detached flaps I will leave between the rear end paper and rear inside cover. Once listed, this will be the least expensive of the First American editions for sale on the Internet despite the provenance. 'Written in the late 1950s at the height of popular fascination with UFO's, Flying Saucers is the great psychologist's brilliantly prescient meditation on the phenomenon that gripped the world. A self-confessed skeptic in such matters, Jung was nevertheless intrigued, not so much by their reality or unreality, but by their psychic aspect. He saw flying saucers as a modern myth in the making, to be passed down the generations just as we have received such myths from our ancestors. In this wonderful and enlightening book Jung sees UFO's as 'visionary rumors', the center of a quasi-religious cult and carriers of our technological and salvationist fantasies. Forty years later, with entire religions based on the writings of science fiction authors, it is remarkable to see just how right he has proved to be.'-- Psychology Press.
