Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the 20th century, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut für Philosophie), course: Wittgensteins Philosophische Untersuchungen, language: English, abstract: Wittgenstein's use of the word 'hinge' for intrinsic certainties, which are forming an unconscious, unjustified foundation of our acting, has spurred an intense discussion in contemporary epistemology. In the build-up of secondary literature about Wittgenstein's late collection of reflections that his literary executors published under the title On Certainty, Danièle Moyal-Sharrock plays an important role with her book 'Understanding Wittgenstein's On Certainty' (2005) and a number of other publications. In her book, she has placed particular weight on the concept of hinges, ascribing to them eight particular properties and vigorously denying them the status of being propositions. Other epistemologists have responded and articulated deviating views. The debate is still going on and this paper attempts to explain, first and foremost, what Wittgenstein wrote about hinges and the concepts interrelated to them, such as doubt, certainty, foundation, and acting. Then I'll summarize, and partly criticize Moyal-Sharrock's position. I shall argue that her accentuation of the nonpropositionality of hinges is a bit exaggerated, a point of view that is also confirmed by some counter-arguments by Annalisa Coliva, who suggests a conciliatory resolution of the conflict. Finally, Moyal-Sharrock gets the last word, though not entirely convincing.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy of the 20th century, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut für Philosophie), course: Philosophy of Moral Psychology, language: English, abstract: This seminar paper is about the balance between intuition and affect on one hand, and conscious reasoning on the other, in moral decisions. The basis for this analysis consists of recent neurobiological and psychological research. The paper first looks for some input from Neurophysiology to understand what is known about the 'wiring' in our brain for moral decisions. Are moral judgments effectuated in the 'rational' cortical regions of the brain or in the 'intuitive', affective, and emotional subcortical region It then presents a controversy between Jonathan Haidt and Pizarro and Bloom over the predominance of intuition over reasoning in moral judgment. Jonathan Haidt proposes a theory called Social Intuitionist Approach that postulates a priority of intuition over reason, combined with a social component. Moral decisions are predominantly intuitive, he argues, and reason is primarily used to justify the decision afterwards.Pizarro and Bloom are not fully convinced. While they agree with some parts of Haidt's theory, they contradict his overall conclusion about the dominance of intuition over reason. In their opinion there is sufficient room for training one's intuitions and for rationally preparing moral decisions.Haidt counters the counter-arguments, but concedes that statistical data are missing, which would allow a final assessment of the matter.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Philosophy - Philosophy Beyond Occidental Tradition, grade: 1.0, University of Vienna (Institut für Philosophie), course: Seminar Texte zur postkolonialen Theorie, language: English, abstract: Edward Said (1935-2003) has been widely praised as a leading thinker of post-colonialismand even as one of its founding figures. Moreover, he 'became one of the most widely known, and controversial, intellectuals in the world during his lifetime' (Ashcroft 2009, 1). His bestknown book, Orientalism (1978), is a milestone in post-colonial theory and was one of thefirst examples for combining French critical theory with Anglophone cultural and textualtradition (cf. Castro Varela 2005, 31). It actually paved the way for differentiating criticalPostcolonial Studies from the earlier Commonwealth Literary Studies with their uncriticalcontinuation of colonial prejudices (cf. ibid, 23). Even Daniel Varisco (2007), who argues fora rather critical view of Said's work, concedes that 'Said's book stimulated a necessary andvaluable debate among scholars who study the Middle East, Islam, and colonial history.'(Varisco 2007, XII).Since a 10-page term paper could never do justice to a literary and scientific masterpiece likeOrientalism, this paper picks out just a small detail of its rich content: In the third and lastchapter of Orientalism, Said introduces a distinction between two forms of Orientalism, latent and manifest. The meaning of this dichotomy does not reveal its full significance atfirst reading. What exactly did Said have in mind by using this terminology - perhapsunconsciously in addition to what he writes about it on some 20 pages of his book Several scholars have commented on this distinction and its significance for Said's work. Thispaper will build on that material and attempt to analyze and summarize what can be foundout about the dichotomy. Particular interest will be devoted to the philosophical roots Saidwas referring to when writing about latent and manifest Orientalism.- Was he influenced by Arab Philosophy in using the dichotomy - Did he use the terms in the psychoanalytical sense introduced by Sigmund Freud andalso used by Jacques Lacan - How do some of Said's critics, like Maria do Mar Castro Varela, Daniel Martin Variscoor John McLeod interpret and evaluate the distinction.

It is aview of scientific realism that accentuates experimental activity for learning about realityrather than armchair philosophy in the search for utmost metaphysical truth. Chang puts itin a nutshell as follows: 'If the buzzword for standard realism is truth, it is progress for activerealism.' (Chang 2012, 223)This term paper attempts to critically look at this new concept, put it in the perspective ofother realist concepts and find answers to questions like the following:- How does Chang's concept fit into the existing landscape of scientific realism - What are the roots of the concept - What is new and attractive in it - What are the weaknesses of the concept First I'll try to define scientific realism as a metaphysical and epistemological position asopposed to anti-realism. In the next chapter I'll present the main arguments for and againstscientific realism, the 'no miracle' argument and the 'pessimistic meta induction', and alsolook at them from Hasok Chang's angle of view. Then a brief overview of common realist positions in philosophy of science will be given, including Hasok Chang's new conception. In the following chapter I'll try to look critically atsome aspects of Chang's 'Active Scientific Realism' and balance the strengths andweaknesses of the concept.
