Harrison, d.d. R.P.? on the initial blank, dated ?1831? in a different hand, gilt edges. 12mo (152 x 84 mm), engraved frontispiece and pp. xii, 417, [3], with four further engraved plates by Longueil after Mariller, text browned in part, A delightful copy of a scarce edition printed by Barbou using Fournier?s typeface. A short note at the foot of the final page points this out for the less discerning reader: ?Ce Livre est imprimé avec les Caractères de M. Fournier le jeune? The text is accompanied by wonderful illustrations: an engraved frontispiece and four engraved plates after Mariller. Barbou printed numerous editions of this seminal text edited by Joseph Valart. The present edition includes an expanded version of Valart?s essay, ?Dissertation sur l?Auteur de l?Imitation? (pp. 385-417), which is not always included. Provenance: Louis Grégoire des Champs Destournelles (1744-1795), Jacobin politician, Minister of Finance during the French Revolution, imprisoned during the Reign of Terror. William O?Brien (1832-1899) was an Irish judge and avid bibliophile. He bequeathed his collection to the Jesuit College of Milltown Park in Dublin in 1899; it was dispersed in 2017. WorldCat lists copies in the Netherlands, in Solothurn in Switzerland, at Harvard and the University of North Texas only.
