Kennedy (1877-1941) began recording African-American folklore at age 13. Many of the entries were gathered from his family's domestics; one, a native of Gretna, Louisiana, would collect anecdotes when visiting home, and offer them to Kennedy upon return. Dust jacket is now preserved in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
