Special Edition by Crowell. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Very Good +; slight shelfwear; light toning to endpapers. No DJ. Cream colored cloth boards and spine with gilt lettering on the front board in a field of blue floral decorations. Clean internals. Inner hinges are sound and not split. Gilt textblock top edge. 48 pp 8vo. Illustrated with 8 B&W plates. The Rubaiyat is a series of quatrains, sparkling with witty epigrammatic observances on life and filled with exquisite, oriental imagery. This book uses the Fitzgerald translation and beautiful Katchadourian illustrations. The book is a translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048-1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. Each is a two-line stanza with two parts per line, hence the word rubayot, meaning "quatrains". A translation of the first version of 1859 is reproduced in the rear in 75 stanzas. A clean very presentable copy.

It is one of the most frequently quoted of lyric poems, and many of its phrases, such as 'A jug of wine, a loaf of bread, and thou' and 'The moving finger writes,' passed into common currency. - Britannica.
