The Rubaiyat is a series of quatrains, sparkling with witty epigrammatic observances on life and filled with exquisite, oriental imagery. This book uses the Fitzgerald translation and beautiful Katchadourian illustrations. The book is a translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048-1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. Each is a two-line stanza with two parts per line, hence the word rubayot, meaning "quatrains". A translation of the first version of 1859 is reproduced in the rear in 75 stanzas. A clean very presentable copy.

Foxing to initial and rear leaves with interior occurrences mostly to b/w plates and their adjacent pages. For the Sun, who scatter'd into flight/The Stars before him fromn the Filed of Night," very light foxing to the preliminaries. And finally, the pages are rough cut, and the preliminaries not quite flush with the boards, a printer's error. Overall an attractive copy, clean and solid.
