A complete survey of the ninety works by Paul Klee (1879-1940) donated by Heinz Berggruen in 1984 to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC. The collection includes eleven paintings, 71 watercolors, and eight b&w drawings plus two paintings found on the verso of other works. All aspects of Klee, both as a painter and as a draftsman, are covered by the collection, which starts in 1893 with a drawing by the then 13-year-old, and ends with a gouache painted in the year of his death. The entire collection is published here for the first time along with informal photographs of the Klee family, behind-the-scenes views of the Bauhaus, and passages from Klee's letters, previously unpublished in English. Texts by Sabine Rewald; introduction by Heinz Berggruen; foreword by Philippe de Montebello; interview with Klee's son Felix conducted by Rewald. First edition, second printing, 1990. 319 pages; color and b&w illustrations throughout; 8.5 x 11 inches.
