How very much greater these problems must be for those who had to leave aU they cherished behind them and start aU over again in new and strange surroundings. I wholeheartedlyendorse the Committee's initiative in publish ing in this monograph the main results of the investigation. These results should be useful in the work of the organizations concerned with refugee welfare. But in wider circles, both in the Netherlands and abroad, this publication should also awaken interest in the refugee question in general and the situation of refugees in the Nether lands in particular. How necessary this interest still is has been shown once again by the recent events in Hungary, which brought untold misery to many thousands. These Hungarian refugees and countless others who before them fled can best be helped to adjust to the new patterns of life if aU who in their daily lives come into contact with them approach them in the right way. Vijf brieven en een visitekaartje (en drie enveloppen), de meeste getypt en gesigneerd in pen en vanwege Wijnens functie als secretaris van de Haagse Kunstkring, maar ook een persoonlijke brief, geheel met de hand geschreven. De oudste brief, van 23 december 1958 is een vriendelijke afwijzing van een uitnodiging voor het bijwonen van een voordrachtavond, gesigneerd 'De Minister van Maatschappelijk werk/ (handt.)', op officieel ministerieel papier, met dienstenvelop. De tweede (1968), eveneens op officieel ministeriepapier, dankt hartelijk voor de bloemengroet en noemt ook (indirect) de mogelijkheid van subsidie via de Zomerpostzegels, hetgeen helaas niet door kan gaan. Het visitekaartje (1968) heeft de handgeschreven toevoeging 'De paashaas wordt hartelijk bedankt!'. Dan zijn er twee brieven uit 1978 en 1979, waarin Klompé meldt niet bij een bijeenkomst te kunnen zijn: 'Dit spijt mij bijzonder want ik heb hele grote waardering voor het werk van Ida Gerhardt'. De persoonlijke brief aan 'Cher Amice' is gedateerd '29 Jan. 1978' en dankt zeer hartelijk voor de dichtbundel 'met het hartelijk woord voorin'.…
