Os lasers têm sido utilizados por cirurgiões orais e maxilofaciais nas últimas quatro décadas, desde então vários relatórios têm sido publicados sobre aplicações do laser em cirurgia oral e maxilofacial. Os lasers estão a ser utilizados como prática de rotina para melhorar a prática cirúrgica, incluindo implantologia, cosmetologia, oncologia, e outras aplicações na odontologia. Com base em estimativas do fabricante, aproximadamente 10% a 20% de todos os cirurgiões orais e maxilofaciais têm um ou mais lasers nos seus consultórios, e a maioria dos cirurgiões tem acesso a lasers no hospital. Os lasers não só enriquecem as actuais opções cirúrgicas de tratamento, mas também expandiram o âmbito da prática. As vantagens pós-operatórias, ou seja, a falta de inchaço, sangramento, dor ou formação de tecido cicatricial e a boa cicatrização de feridas foram observadas em todas as aplicações clínicas e dependeram apenas dos parâmetros físicos do laser utilizado.
