Astronautical Society of the Pacific Conference Series Volume 133. Name in ink on fep. Anuradha Koratkar received her Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Michigan in 1990. Dr. Koratkar's research field is active galactic nuclei. She worked at Space Telescope Science Institute for 13 years from 1990 to 2003, first as post-doctoral fellow and then as an instrument scientist for the Hubble Space Telescope. In 2000 she began working in the field of information systems and developed applications that enhanced science returns from NASA's Earth and Space science missions. In 2001, her team received the NASA Software of the Year Award, Honorable Mention, for the Scientist's Expert Assistant software prototype that provides interactive tools for science proposal development. Dr. Koratkar is currently an Associate Research Scientist at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST or "Webb") is a space telescope that will be the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope. The JWST will provide greatly improved resolution and sensitivity over the Hubble, and will enable a broad range of investigations across the fields of astronomy and cosmology. One of its major goals is observing some of the most distant events and objects in the universe, such as the formation of the first galaxies. These types of targets are beyond the reach of current ground- and space-based instruments. Other goals include understanding the formation of stars and planets, and direct imaging of exoplanets and novas. The JWST is being developed by NASAâ"with significant contributions from the Canadian Space Agency and the European Space Agencyâ"and is named after James E. Webb, the American government official who was the administrator of NASA from 1961 to 1968 and played an integral role in the Apollo program.…
