Paperback. Etat : Good. SO WHAT? decodes argumentation and academic writing in plain language, using examples that students can easily understand. The book teaches "apprentice scholars" tools for investigation, communication, and critical thinking in school and beyond. SO WHAT? includes clear guidance, examples, and practice exercises for how to: construct significant, compelling arguments; read and think critically; develop and revise drafts; collaborate with other writers; and make smart choices in style and arrangement. As one reviewer said, SO WHAT? is "more engaging, more provocative, and more comprehensive" than most of its competitors. SO WHAT? explains how a scholarly apprenticeship can build skills, knowledge, and habits that students can use throughout college and in their personal and professional lives. Rather than introducing every scholarly style or genre, we teach students how to think rhetorically by providing them with heuristics and tools that they can use in a variety of settings. This approach exposes students to habits of mind and writing techniques they can transfer to other classes and to everyday and professional contexts.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. Virtually every problem with the modern American mode of living stems from three major cultural characteristics: a pathological attachment to the automobile, a horrifying apathy toward the obesity epidemic, and a deeply engrained fetishization of employment. This should be plain to anyone paying attention, but it's especially clear if you sell your car and spend six gruelling months riding public transit in Dallas, Texas, arguably the nation's most regrettable example of urban dysfunction. For the better part of a year, I got on the train in one of the biggest cities in the wealthiest nation of all time, only to find myself surrounded by people who are either homeless or commuting to a job that hardly keeps them above the poverty line. Most of them are morbidly obese, and those who aren't are only slim because of heroin or some other destructive analgesic. This country is in shambles for reasons that are material and obvious, but if you turn on the TV, the only issues our political and media intelligentsia find time to talk about are drag queens, QAnon crackpots, the sexual misadventures of partisan pseudo-celebrities, and other such sparkly hysterias. It's all ludicrous political stagecraft that has absolutely nothing to do with the lives of normal Americans, to say nothing of the weakest and most miserable. These conditions, which constitute a clear cultural disease, are so ugly and glaring that a diagnostic report like this really shouldn't be necessary. Kurt Hartman (illustrateur).…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. In the zany and humorous fourth book of National Book Award winner M.T. Anderson's Pals in Peril series, Jasper Dash and his friends must escape the clutches of The Awful Autarch Having mopped up their last crime-fighting caper, our three heroes--Lily Gefelty, Katie Mulligan, and Jasper Dash, Boy Technonaut--are eager to get home. But the secret police in the war-torn realm of fantasy where the three kids are trapped (the state of Delaware) don't want them going anywhere. Our dynamic trio knows way too much about the whereabouts of certain fabulous treasures to escape the grip of Delaware's Ministry of Silence. So, chums, it's a race to the border of New Jersey against spies and government agents and double-crossers.That is, if our heroes make it home alive Chock full of ups, downs, twists, turns, a shark pit. and even a band of sentient lobsters fighting on the side of Good, this fourth installment of the Pals in Peril series is every bit as wild, wacky, and wonderfully outrageous as the first three. Paperback. Etat : Good. Lost Sheep recounts the author's journey from the real world of 1970s America to the rollicking, freedom-loving, outlaw world of Aspen. Blending personal narrative, local history, dramatic interlude, and cultural analysis, the story begins as a literal journey but quickly evolves into the memoir of an entire town-a time and place many consider to be Aspen's Golden Age, when artists, eccentrics, and outlaws took over the city and transformed it into an alpine bohemia. The noteworthy cast of characters-famous, infamous, and unknown-includes Claudine Longet, Jack Nicholson, Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, Steve Martin, and Ted Bundy. The local residents are even more colorful, from a woman who feeds her dog nothing but vegetables to a bookstore owner who believes in psychic surgeries, while everywhere art is being made-and a good deal of hay.…
