Paperback. Etat : Good. At a basic level, this is a distorted detective novel mixed with a love story and a radical statement about narrative art. Beyond the silence that unites and separates Carlos and Elisa, beyond the game that estranges the albino girls, Alicia and Violeta, from pleasant summer evenings, beyond the destiny of Neutria - a city that disappears with childhood - and beyond a Chilean literary movement that could be the last vanguard, while at the same time the greatest falsification, questions arise concerning who truly writes for whom in a novel: the author or the reader.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Within the world of Labbe's fiction, The Murmuration can be understood as a continuation and broadening, a shift toward a more explicit expression of the political project signaled in his early work and a doubling-down on the formal playfulness and elusive sensibility that characterize all of his fiction. Popular forms and genres (from science fiction and journalism in Navidad & Matanza to detective fiction in Loquela to pop music and protest movements in Spiritual Choreographies) have always been integral to Labbe's novels, and with The Murmuration he makes his most direct appeal to the masses yet, engaging the world of professional soccer. With the 1962 World Cup in Chile as the focal point, Labbe builds a narrative that is at once a story of intrigue and action and an exploration of ideas that animate the late-capitalist discourse of our current moment (e.g. class warfare, feminism, political representation, and social justice). What emerges is a novel that enacts - in form and content - the notion that art can only transcend the cages of tradition and convention, of colonialism and global capitalism, of systemic exploitation and extractive politics through collective creative action.…

SYNOPSIS: On the eve of the 1962 World Cup in Chile, a retired sports commentator with a secret ability to influence living beings with his voice encounters one of the directors of the Chilean national team--a feminist with a covert agenda--on an overnight train ride to Santiago. The director convinces the commentator to return to broadcasting in order to call Chile's matches and to utilize his unique vocal power to determine their outcomes. Later, when Chile is facing off against Brazil in the semifinal match, the plan diverges from one of conventional victory and the narrative bifurcates, simultaneously tracking the action on the field and a startling sequence of events that is unfolding in one of the stadium's luxury boxes, and what initially looks like a story of intrigue and action and an exploration of class warfare, representation, and social justice, emerges as a novel that enacts the notion that art can only transcend through collective creative action. Within the world of Carlos Labbé's fiction, this novel can be understood as a continuation and broadening of the political project signaled in his early work and a doubling-down on the formal playfulness and elusive sensibility that characterizes all of his fiction. "Carlos Labbe's [Navidad & Matanza] begins to fuck with your head from its very first word-moving through journalese, financial reporting, whodunit, Joseph Conrad, Raymond Chandler, Nabokov to David Lynch."-Toby LittIt's the summer of 1999 when the two children of wealthy video game executive Jose Francisco Vivar, Alicia and Bruno, go missing in the beach town of Matanza. Long after their disappearance, the people of Matanza and the adjacent town of Navidad consistently report sightings of Bruno-on the beach, in bars, gambling-while reports on Alicia, however, are next to none. And every clue keeps circling back to a man named Boris Real . . .At least that's how the story-or one of many stories, rather-goes. All of them are told by a journalist narrator, who recounts the mysterious case of the Vivar family from an underground laboratory where he and six other "subjects" have taken up a novel-game, writing and exchanging chapters over email, all while waiting for the fear-inducing drug hadn to take its effect, and their uncertain fates.A literary descendant of Roberto Bolao and Andres Neuman, Carlos Labbe's Navidad & Matanza is a work of metafiction that not only challenges our perceptions of facts and observations, and of identity and reality, but also of basic human trust.Carlos Labbe, one of Granta's "Best Young Spanish-Language Novelists," was born in Chile and is the author of six novels, including Navidad & Matanza and Locuela, and a collection of short stories. In addition to his writings he is a musician, and has released three albums. He is a co-editor at Sangria, a publishing house based in Santiago and Brooklyn, where he translates and runs workshops. He also writes literary essays, the most notable ones on Juan Carlos Onetti, Diamela Eltit and Roberto Bolao-three writers whose influence can be seen in Navidad & Matanza. Will Vanderhyden received an MA in Literary Translation from the University of Rochester. He has translated fiction by Carlos Labbe, Edgardo Cozarinsky, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Juan Marse, Rafael Sanchez Ferlosio, and Elvio Gandolfo. A genre-bending novel about two missing children, a fear-inducing drug called "hadn," and seven scientists collaborating on a novel-game. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. By blinking his eyes and moving his pupils, a paraplegic man-the onetime vocalist in a famous rock band-composes a kind of anti-biography that is corrected and expanded upon by an unknown editor. Alternating between the vocalist's impressionistic recollections and the editor's "corrections," an asynchronous story emerges, evoking the vocalist's childhood in southern Chile and telling of the rise and fall of the band that he grew up to lead, while hinting at a multiplicity of other narrative possibilities. The latest from one of Granta's best Spanish-language novelists shows the struggle between private and official biographies, and the fleeting nature of collective happiness.
