Extremely rare first edition of the Dutch translation of Alessandro Giraffi's Le rivolutioni di Napoli, a contemporary account of the famous Neapolitan revolt of 1647, translated by the prolific author and translator Lambert van den Bos (1620-1698). We have not been able to trace any copies of the present edition in institutional collections, and USTC lists it as a "lost book".The Neapolitan revolt broke out on 7 July 1647, largely in response to heavy taxes on food imposed by the Spanish authorities. Led by the Italian fisherman Tomasso Aniello (1620-1647), better known as Masaniello, the rebels forced the Spanish viceroy, the Duke of Arcos, to accept their demands and abolish the most oppressive taxes. As a result, Masaniello was appointed Captain-General of the people. He was assassinated only a few days later, but the unrest continued and eventually led to the proclamation of the short-lived Neapolitan Republic.Besides his numerous translations, Van den Bos published historical works and biographies of contemporary figures, including William III, Mary Stuart and Michiel de Ruyter, as well as a history of the years 1669-1674, with particular attention to the Dutch Rampjaar of 1672. His translation of Giraffi appears to have been popular, with further editions published in 1652, 1655, 1657, 1664 and 1702. Another Dutch translation by a different translator appeared in Haarlem in the same year as the present edition.The vellum and title page are soiled. The leaves are occasionally water stained.
