To complement her husband Andrew Lang's collections of "color" fairy tale books, Mrs (Leonora Blanche) Lang came out with her own collection of 34 "strange stories,'' also edited by Andrew, with a Preface written after his death by Mrs. Lang. Illustrated throughout with a Rembrandt-gravure frontispiece taken from a photo, with Lang's facsimile signature underneath, + 18 enchanting full-page plates in pen-and-ink + 12 in full color by longtime collaborator H. J. Ford throughout the 312 pages of text. A FIRST EDITION (British), First Printing, from 1914, this hardcover 8vo (5.5" x 8.5") has rust-colored cloth over boards, blindstamped with elaborate, but faded, gilt designs & lettering to front & spine. Gilt to top outside page edges is intact & brighter. Overall condition is Good: stitched binding & hinges are secure, but loosening & fragile, splitting between pages xvi & page 1. Hinges secure. Pages moderately tanned, with random foxed spots, else completely unmarked. Soiling & fading to exterior, rather heavy rubbing to extremities. Splitting at both front & back intersections of spine & covers, with slight cloth loss to both ends of spine. Rubbing to extremities & corners bumped & worn down to underlying boards, with fraying of cloth. Still, this is one of Lang's more scarce titles & the illustrations are magnificent!
