Hardback. Etat : Good. On December 2, 1863, a bronze statue was placed atop the dome of the United States Capitol Building. Standing more than 19 feet tall, the figure called Freedom was designed and created during a period of great turmoil in American history. But at one point during its creation, it wasn't clear the statue would even get to its final destination. One man, in particular, played an important role in seeing the statue through to completion. His name was Philip Reid and he was a slave. Born into slavery, Philip Reid grew up on a South Carolina farm, helping various craftsmen such as the blacksmith and the potter. Eventually, he was sold to a man named Clark Mills, who was opening a foundry in Washington, D.C. Mr. Mills's foundry is contracted to cast the Freedom statue but the project is jeopardized when a seemingly unsolvable puzzle arises. And it is Philip Reid, an American-born slave, who steps in. Christie, R Gregory (illustrateur). …

Paperback. Etat : Good. Ghosts. Unearthly presences. Things that go bump in the night. St. Augustine, America's oldest city, has them all. The unique and often turbulent history of the Ancient City has spawned more than four hundred years' worth of shadowy figures of the dark hours. Come walk through misty, cobblestone streets, down shaded alleys, along the wall of the old stone fort. Smell the smoke of ancient fires, the musty corners of old houses, the garlic and olive oil of Majorcan kitchens. Listen to the tinkling of wine glasses long shattered, the strum of Spanish guitars long broken, and the laughter of a dozen foreign tongues long dead. Awaken to the midnight howling of the city's prowling cats; seek sleep between nightmares lulled by the lapping waters of the Matanzas Bay--named for the massacre of the French Huguenots by the Spanish here in 1565. Author Dave Lapham has collected twenty-four stories from St. Augustine's rich oral history into a light, yet sometimes hair-raising peek at the spooky side of the Oldest City.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. "Nothing will be the same after September 11th 2001." This is the wisdom offered and widely received since the announcement of the war on terrorism, a permanent war declared on both an unknown enemy and an abstract noun. But in this book, Lewis Lapham shows that the imperial behaviour of the US government is perfectly consistent with the practice of past administrations. Finding sceptics in the "battle against evil" is a hard task: unpopular opinions seldom make an appearance in the US press or on the TV news, and during the months since the destruction of the World Trade Center, the voices of dissent in America have been few and far between. Lewis Lapham is an exception.…
