It was published originally by Ace Books. This is Ace Book 71501-X. The dramatic cover art was done by Bob Adragna. Laumer wrote quite a few stories featuring the interstellar diplomat and agent provocateur, James Retief. The following is an excerpt from the cover blurb: "The official accounts of Terra's efforts in the field of interstellar diplomacy during the 29th century are available for the dialing to anyone willing to pore through the records of the 'Corps Diplomatique Terestrienne', For those of sufficient discernment, however, it will be evident that the Corps' records, incredibly voluminous though they be, fail to tell the whole truth ? indeed, to some degree, must obscure it. Surely it had been guarded solely by the efforts of such persons as Ambassadors Magnan, Thunderstroke , and Grossblunder. Terra's Sphere of Influence would have crumpled instantly before the diplomatic assaults of the Groaci. That it did not demonstrates that other factors were at work. One such factor was a career diplomat named James Retief. Contained here are several accounts of his achievements, illustrating how a few able men were able to save the galaxy for Man." ACE M-165, New York (1966) From the cover blurb: "A parallel-time-tracks story with van Vogtian wheels-within-wheels ramifications. Brion Bayard, of our own continuum, is snatched into one in which there never was a United States, in which Northern Europe, Britain, the Western Hemisphere and Australia form one huge empire, in which Hermann Goering is a useful ally. He learns that there is a third continuum, in which nuclear war has nearly shattered civilization, leaving a North African dictatorship headed by --- himself ! The scheme: replace the bad Brion Bayard with the good one and stop the guerrilla raids on the Imperium. Naturally Brion falls in with this plan, and naturally things are not quite as simple as thy seem . This is well-done action, adventure and cloak-and-dagger stuff." - from a review by P. "The Glory Game" by by Science Fiction master Keith Laumer is a classic science fiction adventure situated centuries in the future and far out into the reaches of intergalactic space. The hero of this novel is faced with the harsh reality of intergalactic war. He is also hampered by divisive politics - the cover blurb indicates a similarity to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident from the Viet Nam War era - which was fairly contemporary with the time that this fast-paced sci -fi novel. Laumer was, prior to his writing career, an officer in the United States Air Force, and a diplomat in the United States Foreign Service. He was trained for war, and he experienced international politics first-hand -- experiences which he put to good use in his many stories. Laumer is known for the Retief series of intergalactic political - espionage novels. Keith Laumer provided entertainment for millions of happy readers with his perennially popular series about James Retief, intergalactic diplomat. As well as the Retief stories he wrote numerous other science fiction novels and stories that were equally entertaining - and often had a streak of humor. The 1972 cover blurb : "One of the most prolific and gifted writers in a very fast field. In this arena Laumer is close to being one of the old-timers (no pun intended, despite the theme of this collection). He is, quite simply, very good indeed and one helluva lot of fun to read. Five variations on a theme -- Well, four really. The fifth is just so damn much fun it didn't seem fair to leave it out. We don't know anyone but Keith Laumer who could make Lucifer, a quantum professor, entropy, dimensions, negative-R, luck, devils and a beautiful Samoan girl all hang together so delightfully. And it does have, or could have, something to do with time distortion if you look hard enough. But there are still four more for those of you who insist on finding out about honest-to-God time travel. An area in which Laumer is an authority if not a downright originator."
