Louis-Léopold Boilly (* 5. Juli 1761 in La Bassée bei Lille, Département Nord; 4. Januar 1845 in Paris)[1] war ein französischer Maler und Lithograph. Boilly war der Sohn des Holzbildhauers Arnould Boilly. Nach einem Aufenthalt in Douai lernte er seit 1779 bei dem Maler Dominique Doncre in Arras. 1785 ging er nach Paris, wo er schnell als Maler von Porträts und Genrebildern Erfolg hatte. 1791 nahm er erstmals am Salon teil. Seine Genrebilder gelten als besonders lebendig und naturwahr. Seine Bilder des Pariser Lebens haben auch sittengeschichtlichen und historischen Wert. Etat : Fair. A WONDERFUL FRENCH CARICATURE BY LOUIS-LEOPOLD BOILLY - sc The 14-1/8 inch high by 10-3/8 inch wide color lithograph caricatures a drably dressed older couple. The man, attired in gray, cradles a locking box into which he's placing coins from the stacks on the table he leans on. The man suspiciously looks back at the old woman who, swadled in brown clothes and cradling bags of what one can only assume is money, gazes over the man's shoulder. Titled at center under the image "L'Avarice". "G. lith. de Delpech" is printed at right under the image. Boilly's signature is reproduced in lithograph at left under the image. Printed on heavy stock, the lithograph is mounted onto cardboard. The edges are stained and darkened and there is some very minor foxing to the creamy white paper. A short tear along the left edge is repaired and reinforced by the mount. A piece is chipped away from the top right corner of the print and its mount. Good. The French artist Louis-Leopold Boilly (1761-1845) moved to Paris in 1786 where he set up his successful business as a painter and lithographer. Credited with drawing the first dated French lithograph in 1802, he went on to successfully caricature social and political subjects.

Loose as Issued. Etat : Good. Boilly. (illustrateur). 1st Edition. 10 x 8 inch (25 x 20 cm) hand coloured copper engraving part aquatint. on hand made paper with the date 1831 and the initials H.M.I. S (or Mdi, not clear?) watermark in the paper. No name attached but definitely figures created by Boilly, but in a grouping not listed or rather, found, a variant of his other work entitled "The Fortune Teller" which can be seen online, this one cannot. This image has the word "Fortuneteller", singular and not hyphenated. There is also a border within the plate mark (unusual for this caricaturist/artist), was it re-engraved and pirated at the same period in England as I would expect the titles to be in French? Some handling and surface dirt, slim split at left edge outside print, image itself remains frameable and attractive. Good only. (Whatever is being said the dog doesn't like it one bit!).
