Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers an unprecedented look into the early development of Padovan rustic literature, gathering previously scattered and rare texts from the late 14th through the early 16th centuries. The texts include sonnets, prose dialogues, songs, carnival farces, and jokes. They stand as valuable relics of popular genres, especially of the secular theatre and the theatrical traditions that developed from it. The author provides the reader with background information on time, place, and authorship. They also describe the criteria that guided the book's organization. For example, the sonnets by Marsilio da Carrara and Francesco Vannozzo, who were contemporaries of Chaucer, are presented first. They are the earliest known poems in rustic dialect and date back to the 1370s, shortly before Vannozzo's move to Padua. The section concludes with the sonnets of the Padovan jurist Eliseo, written about a century later. This book will be of keen interest to scholars of theatre and literature. However, it can also be appreciated by the general reader, who will find much to enjoy in these pieces, which offer a lively and authentic glimpse into the daily lives and preoccupations of ordinary people during this period. It sheds light on the material and moral existence of peasants, their struggles against poverty and oppression, and their expressions of protest and rebellion. The book shows how rustic literature addressed itself to the harsh realities of life, a perspective that would become increasingly central to the development of literary realism.
