Sir Thomas Maclear resigned directorship in Spring 1870. On 4 June 1870 Edward James Stone was appointed "Her Majesty's Astronomer at the Cape". Transit-circle observations by Thomas and George Maclear, William Mann, George Christie; Donati's Comet observations were reported in Memoirs RAS (Vol.29). Instrumental correction tables (both years), R.A. Stars (both years), Star Catalogue of concluded mean R.A and mean N.P.D. (both years), R.A. and N.P.D. of the Sun, Moon and Planets (1860); R.A.
