Rubbed corners and edges, worn cloth at joints, faded and worn off gilt on spine, and slight bowing of boards. Binding tight. Newer endpapers. Dampstains on lower edge, extending into text, including some plates. Foxing on pages. All plates present as called for, including 11 chromo-lithographic landscape views, several in very good condition. Folding Map of Exploration and Surveys in New Mexico and Utah has light dampstains and fold splits. A report on Cretaceous fossils by F. B. Meek contains detailed fossil illustration plates. Though the survey was conducted in 1859, publication of this report was delayed due to the Civil War. Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Good. Etat de la jaquette : No Dust Jacket. First Edition. First edition printed in 1876. Dark brown cloth boards with faded gilt lettering on spine. Spine is quite faded and gilt has largely worn away; hinges partially cracked; head of spine is frayed and split and has been glued back in place. Scuffing and shelf wear to boards; rubbing to edges, which has exposed the boards at the corners. Binding is surprisingly tight. Interior is toned but readable; some foxing, mostly to page edges; slight chipping to some page edges, does not impact content. Small bookplate from previous owner on first free endpaper, small number sticker on front pastedown. All 22 plates are present with 11 chromolithographic landscape views (all with tissue guards) , three other landscape views in black and white, and eight black and white plates with fossils. Plates are in very good condition with occasional foxing. Folding map that measures 36 x 30 ½ inches is bound in and in very good condition. Map has two tears where it is attached to the text block (neither impacts content) , slight toning, and a few small breaks at the intersections of folds. In 1859, Captain John N. Macomb led an expedition northwest from Santa Fe along the Old Spanish Trail in search of a route for transporting military supplies into Utah, eventually reaching the confluence of the Green and Grand rivers. Most of the text is J. S. Newberry's geological report. F. B. Meek contributed descriptions of Cretaceous fossils. Publication of the report was delayed until 1876 because of the Civil War. A fascinating report known for its detailed map and striking chromolithographic plates including the view of Shiprock that Farquhar called "one of the most pleasing of the scenic views made in that epoch." Farquhar 23. Howes M179. ; Plates and Map; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 152 pp.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very good minus. First edition. 152pp. Quarto [30 cm] Original dark brown cloth with gilt title to backstrip. Front endpaper cracked along the hinge. Light internal foxing. With eleven color lithographic plates of scenery (all with tissue guards), three black and white landscape plates, and eight black and white fossil plates. Large folding map present at rear, with periodic tears to the edges and folds. The longest tear is split, measuring roughly 6" deep. This publication is considered by many to be a geographical continuation of the Ives report, although the gap of the Grand Canyon is not filled in. Newberry was the geologist for both expeditions. According to Farquhar, "The Lithograph of Shiprock is one of the most pleasing of the scenic views made in that epoch." Originally scheduled to be printed in 1861, the Civil War delayed the publication for fifteen years. Howes M179. Farquhar 23. Wheat 983. Moffat 61.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. 1st Edition. 4to., (12 x 9 ½ inches). Large folding lithographic map of "Explorations and Surveys in New Mexico and Utah. 1860" (slightly toned), 11 fine chromolithographic and 11 lithographic plates. Contemporary brown cloth, spine gilt (extremities a bit worn). Provenance: With the contemporary manuscript ownership inscription of "E. Z. Steeven, 1st Lieut. & Adjutant 3rd Cavalry." First edition. Publication of this report was originally intended for 1861, but the Civil War intervened and prevented publication for another fifteen years. The expedition under Macomb went west from Santa Fe across northern New Mexico and Arizona to the Colorado and "showed conclusively that no feasible supply route existed leading into the Great Basin from that direction. However, in the realm of geography and geology its implications were considerable. The whole drainage of the San Juan had been traced and the relationship of that river with the Colorado clearly established. More important, they had also established that the Green River united with the Grand to form the Colorado. The entire maze of intricate canyon country had been threaded, and its geography revealed for the first time. In addition, Newberry was able to establish numerous stratigraphic columns, and to trace the Triassic, Jurassic, and Carboniferous strata far out across the Colorado River. Newberry introduced a new level of sophistication into the study of western geology. Of Newberry it might be said that more than any other scientist since Frémont he had opened up new and unknown country to the civilized world" (Goetzmann, "Army Exploration in the American West"). Alliot, p. 144. Graff 2647. Howes M179.
