Ninth Edition. 21 x 14 cm. xv, 551 pages. Later fine polished calf. Dark blue and green spine labels. Gilt titles and decorations. All edges gilt. Marbled end papers. Binder Stamp ('Bound by Bayntun Riviere Bath England') on verso of front free end paper. Near fine condition. Minor shelf wear, rubbing and bumping. Joint and hinges started to crack. Internally bright and clean. Thomas Robert Malthus (1766 - 1834) was an English economist, cleric, and scholar influential in the fields of political economy and demography. One of the most important and influential works in the history of economic thought. The central idea of the essay - and hub of the Malthusian theory - was a simple one. If the natural increase in population occurs the food supply becomes insufficient, and the size of the population is checked by 'misery' - that is the poorest sections of the community suffer disease and famine. Malthus recognises two other possible checks to population expansion: first 'vice' - that is, homosexuality, prostitution, and abortion (all totally unacceptable to Malthus); and second 'moral restraint' - the voluntary limitation of the product of children by the postponement of marriage" (PMM). "For today's readers, living in a post-Malthus era, the world's population problems are well known and serious, but no longer sensational. It is difficult therefore to appreciate the radical and controversial impact made by the Essay at the time of publication. It challenged the conventional notion that population growth is an unmixed blessing. It discussed prostitution, contraception, and other sexual matters. And it gave vivid descriptions of the horrendous consequences of overpopulation and of the brutal means by which populations are checked" (ODNB). Despite its unpopularity with liberal critics, Malthus's principle of population became accepted as a central tenet of classical political economy and Charles Darwin acknowledged Malthus's influence in the development of his theory of natural selection. Etat : Very Good. Second edition, "with considerable additions from the author's own manuscript and an original memoir". Richard Cobden's copy, with engraved bookplate to the front pastedown for "Dunford Library" (Cobden's home) incorporating the initials "R. C.". Octavo. Contemporary half diced plum roan over marbled boards, the spine ruled in gilt and with titles in gilt. pp. liv, [2], 446. A very good copy, the binding firm albeit with a little cracking to the front hinge, heavy rubbing to the boards, rubbing to the joints and spine ends, and wear to the corners. The contents with some light spotting to the preliminary pages and a minor crease to the bottom corner of a handful of pages are otherwise in very good order throughout. The second, expanded edition of this key work of economic theory by Thomas Malthus, originally published as a rebuttal to David Ricardo's 'On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation' in 1820. This subsequent edition was substantially revised by Malthus himself and published posthumously two years after his death in 1834; it also includes the first appearance of William Otter's notable essay regarding his friend's life, a "Memoir of Robert Malthus". Malthus had set about editing his Principles almost immediately after it appeared in print, incorporating changes both minor and major, particularly with regards to the important chapter on value theory (building on the work of Adam Smith). (Hollander, 'The Economics of Thomas Robert Malthus', p. 4). An interesting association copy, coming from the library of the contemporary radical politician, campaigner for free trade, and co-founder of the Anti-Corn Law League, Richard Cobden (1804-1865). Provenance: From the library of Richard Cobden at his home, Dunford House.…

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Leather. 8vo. Printed for J. Johnson by T. Bensley, London, UK. 1806. Two Volumes, xvi, 505 pgs; vii, 559 pgs. Third Edition. Bound in gilt ruled fine calf leather with titles present to the spine. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities (boards are lightly rubbed and worn). Previous owner's bookplate present to the front pastedown. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Third edition, the first to be published in 2 volumes and the first published after the Great Quarto edition of 1803, of one of the most important and influential books in the history of economic thought. The third edition contained numerous revisions, among which was a text entitled, A Reply to the Chief Objections which have been urged against the Essay on the Principle of Population, which was also published separately so that it might be bound with earlier ones. As the world's population continues to grow at a frighteningly rapid rate, Malthus's classic warning against overpopulation gains increasing importance. An Essay on the Principle of Population examines the tendency of human numbers to outstrip their resources, and argues that checks in the form of poverty, disease, and starvation are necessary to keep societies from moving beyond their means of subsistence. Malthus's simple but powerful argument was controversial in his time; today his name has become a byword for active concern about humankind's demographic and ecological prospects. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.…

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 3rd Edition. London: Printed for J. Johnson, in St. Paul's Church-Yard, By T. Bensley, Bolt Court, Fleet Street, 1806. Third Edition collated and complete. Two volumes, in recent dark calf with gilt titles to red leather labels, gilt bands, marbled paper covered boards, new end papers, text blocks tight, tanned and foxed throughout, with some creasing, damp staining and wrinkling to the pages. Thomas Robert Malthus FRS (17661834) was an English economist, cleric, and scholar influential in the fields of political economy and demography. In his 1798 book An Essay on the Principle of Population, Malthus observed that an increase in a nation's food production improved the well-being of the population, but the improvement was temporary because it led to population growth, which in turn restored the original per capita production level. In other words, humans had a propensity to use abundance for population growth rather than for maintaining a high standard of living, a view and stance that has become known as the "Malthusian trap" or the "Malthusian spectre". Populations had a tendency to grow until the lower class suffered hardship, want and greater susceptibility to war, famine, and disease, a pessimistic view that is sometimes referred to as a Malthusian catastrophe. Pagination: xvi, 505, [63]pp; vii, [i], 559pp. Signatures: A to Nn in gatherings of 8, Oo in gathering of 4; A in gathering of 4, B-Nn in gatherings of 8. Provenance: no inscription or bookplates. Thomas Robert Malthus, FRS (1766-1834), known as Thomas Malthus or Robert Malthus (his preference), was an English demographer and political economist. vi, 601, [1] p. First edition. It has a good quality mid-twentieth century binding with a polished morocco spine, marbled boards and vellum corners. The spine with gold lines and a contrasting label. Minor rubs to the spine ends, otherwise in very good condition. There is an undated pencil note on the title page '£45 Repair'. The text with a few signs of use and some pale paper toning. IMPORTANT COOPERATIVE MOVEMENT PROVENANCE: The title page is inscribed at the head 'Society for promoting Working Men's Assocns / 34 Castle Place --? Oxford Street, with a shelfmark R31'. The Society was founded in 1849 by the Christian Socialists in an attempt to found self governing workshops. Lower down the title page is the oval stamp of Ormond Street Working Mens College which still exists in Camden. Founded in 1854 by Frederick Denison Maurice, Wiki describes it as 'The Working Men's College, is among the earliest adult education institutions established in the United Kingdom, and Europe's oldest extant centre for adult education. Founded by Christian socialists, at its inception it was at the forefront of liberal education philosophy.' At different times its teachers included Thomas Hughes whose latin lectures were apparently not so popular as his boxing club, F.J. Furnival, and E.M. Forster.…
