All night she had lain motionless in the massive four-poster bed, unable to sleep, the stillness of the house oppressive and clutching. Even after weeks of knowing it would not come, her ears were still tuned for the baby's hungry cry. Her breast still filled, ready to welcome the tiny, eager lips. With these words begins a novel that takes, the reader into the heart and mind of Jenny MacPartland, who marries the man she loves- only to find herself trapped in a world of horror. .Jenny is a divorced mother of two girls-attractive, poor, charming and resourceful, skilled at making ends meet and hardly even daring to hope the right man will come along for her. A city girl, Jenny supports herself and her children by working in a fashionable Manhattan art gallery. It is there that she first becomes aware of the paintings of Erich Krueger- brilliantly detailed, lyrical evocations of peaceful country life that touch her deeply- and, above all, of the haunting portrait of a beautiful woman who seems to her strangely familiar. When she meets Krueger, a handsome, powerful and elegant man, Jenny is swept off her feet. After a lightning courtship, Erich marries Jenny and carries her off to his home in Minnesota, a home of such wealth, comfort and luxury that Jenny feels like a princess in a fairy story, despite the forbidding, cold and brooding landscape-and the rumors that something terrible once happened in the exquisite Krueger mansion. Soon, however, Jenny's happiness is shattered by a series of bizarre and terrifying incidents that threaten first her marriage, then her children, then her life-until Jenny's only hope lies in unraveling the truth about the past, a truth that is hidden in the great house which has become her prison.

The Hong Kong residence in which she is staying is called the Pavilion of Apricots. It is a beautiful palace filled with an extraordinary art collection, but for Sarah Brent, it has become a prison, the scene of events over which she has no control, which threaten to overwhelm her career, her great love- and even her life. Sarah is an ambitious young woman who is a specialist in fine jewels, a designer as well as an agent for wealthy collectors. She is employed by Theodora Paradine, a ruthless American woman of whom Sarah says, "I have worked for Theodora for nearly two years, long enough to know that if she wants something-a jewel, a house or a man-her money will get it for her." Theodora's power encircles Sarah and threatens all that she cares about. Yet she feels that her own success is tied to her relationship with Theodora, and she makes great sacrifices to sustain it. For example, as part of her job, she must travel all over the world to jewel auctions to bid on great pieces. This responsibility has led to the breakup of her marriage to her physician-husband Maritus. Now Sarah has come to Hong Kong, where she grew up, to see her father and to perform some professional duties for Theodora. Almost as soon as she arrives on the island she helps Theodora acquire an ancient and extremely valuable jade belt. Sarah soon suspects that the beautiful object has been stolen from the People's Republic of China, but when she tries to rectify the situation, she runs into a terrifying sequence of events which seems to involve the people she cares most about in the world: Marius, her estranged husband, and her beloved father.

Half-title. 19th century full calf with gilt-roll border to covers, spine gilt compartments within gilt-decorated raised bands, with contrasting leather title label. This work collects hundreds of recipes for fermented beverages - wines (foreign and domestic), malt liquors, cider, perry, vinegar, spirits, liqueurs, cordials, and compounds - alongside a wealth of supporting information. It opens with a history of wine and a treatise on brewing (porter and various ales), then turns to the fermentation and distillation of spirits "of every denomination," including alcohol, brandy, rum, geneva (gin), and whisky. A fourth section covers cider, perry, mead, and vinegar, followed by chapters on cellaring wines, beers, porters, ales, and spirits, with guidance on refining and managing flavour, colour, and concentration as they age. The book closes with three technical chapters: data on hydrometers and saccharometers for the distiller, the Parliamentary laws governing licensed vendors (innkeepers and publicans among them), and several tables for converting weights and measures. Some foxing and other, minor oxidising; leather with minor chip to head of spine, rubbed to fore-edges, but overall very good. Book.
