Further reading suggestions in English and in Arabic. From the INTRODUCTION - When it was decided to publish a representative selection of any one specific genre of contemporary Arabic writing, the choice fell perfectly naturally upon the short story. Not only because this enables one to present in a single volume a wide range of relatively brief texts, each of which is complete in itself, but rather because this form has shown a particularly interesting and vigorous development in the Arab world in the past few decades. The literary pages of the daily news- papers have often seen the first publication of stories which have later been collected into volumes, and a wide public has formed a discriminating taste for the form: some writers such as Youssef el Sharouni have made it their principal means of imaginative expression; some such as Youssef Idris have begun their literary careers with the short story; others such as Mohamed Kamel Hussein have turned to it after first venturing into other fields of activity, or have returned to it (as Naguib Mahfouz has done) after having made their names in other genres. The period during which the short story has been the dominant genre in Arabic literature, the one at which an aspiring writer would most normally try his hand, is the two decades which followed the Second World War; only in the last few years has the short story been yielding pride of place to the theatre. This flowering therefore coincides with the period with which we wish to acquaint the English- speaking reader : the mid-twentieth century, the generation which came after that of the founding-fathers of our modern imaginative literature, men such as Taha Hussein, Mikhail Naima and Ibrahim el Mazni (some of these are still with us, and some, indeed, still active in our field, and have therefore been represented in this collection: we open with stories by Mahmoud Taymour and Tewfik el Hakim). While these outstanding precursors are gradually becoming known internationally, the Arabic literature of the second half of the century, the truly and immediately contemporary voice of the Arabs, is far less so. This volume is a contribution to the attempt at bringing such intertraffic as thoroughly up to date as the mechanism of selection, translation, and publication in book form, can allow.
