Hardcover. Etat : New. 'I am a venereal sore in the private part of language.' that's Namdeo Dhasal, the maverick Marathi poet who hardly had any formal education. Born in 1949 in a former 'untouchable' community in Pur-Kanersar village near Pune in Maharashtra, as a teenage taxi driver he lived among pimps, prostitutes, petty c…riminals, drug peddlers, gangsters and illicit traders in Bombay/ Mumbai's sinister and sordid underworld. In 1972, he founded Dalit panther, the militant organisation modelled on black panther. The same year he published Golpitha that belongs to the tradition in modern urban poetry beginning with Baudelaire's Les Fleurs DU mal. Since then, he has published eight collections of poems from which this representative selection is drawn. In 2004, India's National Academy of letters, Sahitya Akademi, honoured Dhasal with the only lifetime achievement Award it gave during its Golden jubilee br>celebrations Dhasal's long-time friend and bilingual poet Dilip Chitre, considers Namdeo Dhasal to be one of the outstanding poets of the twentieth century. He died in 2014.

Soft cover. Etat : New. The world is on the brink of World War II. Herta, like thousands of other Jews, is escaping from Hitler's Germany to Shanghai with her frail mother and meagre possessions. Chakradhar Vidhwans, a Marathi man, is returning to Mumbai after a long stay in England. While on the ship from Italy to Shanghai, Her…ta is rejected for her race, and Chakradhar gets into a fight with a waiter who insults him for his skin colour. A chance encounter leads to Herta and Chakradhar finding solace and love in each other. But when Chakradhar disembarks in India and Herta can't, their separation is tragic and moving. Originally published in 1939 in Marathi as Ranaangan, this powerful investigation of nationalism is also a testimony to the redemptive power of love. Urgent and relevant now more than ever, this classic is brought to a new readership in a luminous translation by the celebrated author and translator Jerry Pinto.

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Vijaya Rajadhyaksha is one of the most celebrated women writers in Marathi. She has been writing for over fifty years. The twelve stories in this collection, originally written in Marathi between 1956 and 1998, explore a woman's relationship with society, with men, and most importantly with herself, and… her search for her own identity as opposed to what the world invests her with. The questions that arise from the roles assigned to her, the possibilities that these roles throw up for her, the way in which her experience of all these undergoes a change in the flow of time, form the crux of her fiction. Delicately and sensitively the author describes the physical and mental world of a woman and how she balances the demands of one with the needs of the other. How the apparent conflict between the two is resolved, through a deep and profound understanding of the female body and a woman's mind, is a hallmark of Vijayabai's writing.

Soft cover. Etat : New. 1st Edition. Anjali Purohit s lovingly crafted translations of Bahinabai Choudhari s poetry bring into English both the cadence and the ethos of this remarkable woman s oeuvre. Bahinabai (1880 1951) was named after a 17th century saint who composed devotional abhanga poetry. Born into one farming family i…n northwestern Maharashtra, she was married, at an early age as was customary in her generation, into another. Her everyday life revolved around the activities of running a household in a demanding rural economy and attending to the fields. Along the way, Bahinabai began to compose ovis a form of poetry that has been sung by women in Maharashtra for centuries, and is closely related to the rhythm of grindstone and well windlass in a regional variant of Marathi known as Ahirani. Unlettered, she wrote nothing down. Her ovis might have been passed down orally after her death; but equally, they might have vanished from memory. Fortunately, they were transcribed and committed to print by her son, Sopandev Choudhari, in 1952. Through print, recordings, the radio and academic syllabi, they have since passed into Maharashtrian culture at large. In Bahinabai s poetry, women s labour receives long overdue acknowledgement, as do seemingly quotidian subjects that vanish below the radar of literary modernism: family relationships, financial difficulties, the vegetation and landscapes of the countryside, the Divine, and the challenge of leading a life of wisdom and prayer in the face of the world s capacity for mischief. Anjali Purohit engages closely and deftly with the texture and resonances of Bahinabai s poetry, her English shot through with Marathi as she attempts to convey as much of the oral tonality and lifeworld of the original as possible. Through this, she seems to argue that English in India cannot remain aloof from the subcontinent s other languages, but must expand itself to include and be enriched by them. (jacket).

Soft cover. Etat : New. 1st Edition. Sharankumar Limbale s stories open up a brutal and cruel world conditioned and sanctioned by the caste system. They present an account of Dalit lives in post-independence India, with the Ambedkarite movement and the schisms within it, as a prominent backdrop. The anti-Dalit logic of reserved…constituencies, the predicament of Dalit writing, the fallout of communal violence for those at the margins, the implications of festivals like Ganapati, the contradictions of job reservations, the horrors of the institution of schooling; family, childhood, friendships, love, sexuality-all take on dark new hues. They are also a rare and moving account of Dalit masculinity today. Dalit Brahmin is a sarcastic epithet for the urban, educated Dalit middle class who look down upon their own folk much as the Brahmins do, and seek to distance themselves from their caste identity. Yet, it is also this class which bears the responsibility of emancipating the Dalit masses from the chains of caste. The stories, told in the first or third person, speak directly to the reader and carry the authority of testimony. Each story sets out to correct, to inform, and to illuminate the changing lives of rural and small-town Dalits. Unsettling and exuding a stark raw power, these vibrant cameos-seamlessly translated by Priya Adarkar-comfortably bridge the difficult divides between imaginative literature, autobiographical fiction and documentary narrative. A must read for all those who love India and Indian literature.

Soft cover. Etat : New. 1st Edition. Contents: Introduction. 1. Caste in the modern world, 1850-1961. 2. Colonial state: local and micro context. 3. Bandodkar s charisma and post-colonial Goa, 1963 1973. 4. Empowering through land and tenancy reforms. 5. The political economy of social transformation. Conclusion. Bibliography. I…ndex. This is the Marathi version of India s First Democratic Revolution: Dayand Bandodkar and the Rise of Bahujan in Goa written by Dr Parag D Parobo published by Orient BlackSwan. Goa features in academic and popular discourse as a place of exceptions, contrary in several ways to national trends. Along with its small geographical size, Goa s legacy of Portuguese colonialism is often cited as the leading reason behind its character. However, such explanations disregard its complex history and fail to address one of its most important distinctions: the fact that it brought to power in the Assembly elections of 1963, a government driven by the Bahujan Samaj; the first of its kind in India. This government was headed by Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar, a lower caste mine owner and philanthropist, whose popularity continued to wax over the next decade. Parag D. Parobo tackles the question of Goan exceptionalism in India s First Democratic Revolution, focusing not solely on its Portuguese past, but rather on the variety of influences that shaped modern Goa. Central to this issue are the comparatively little explored story of caste-based land and power relations in pre-colonial and early colonial Goa; emerging caste movements and identity politics among both upper castes and lower castes in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and the interactions of caste politics with competing colonialisms, both Portuguese and British. Parobo traces the history of land relations and caste movements into the post-Liberation period of Bandodkar s far-reaching land reforms, which destroyed the centrality of land in power-privilege relations, liberated lower caste tenants from crippling dependence on landlords, and opened up new employment opportunities for the Bahujan. Accompanied by substantial investments in education and health, they ushered in greater equity and democratisation. Goa, therefore, scripted a distinctive story of Bahujan success. This volume explores the history, and its implications for Bahujan politics in India.
