Soft cover. Etat : As New. 1st Edition. Book is in excellent condition. Spine tight with no creases. Pages clean and unmarked. White Americans, abetted by neo-conservative writers of all hues, generally believe that racial discrimination is a thing of the past and that any racial inequalities that undeniably persist―in wages, fa…mily income, access to housing or health care―can be attributed to African Americans' cultural and individual failures. If the experience of most black Americans says otherwise, an explanation has been sorely lacking―or obscured by the passions the issue provokes. At long last offering a cool, clear, and informed perspective on the subject, this book brings together a team of highly respected sociologists, political scientists, economists, criminologists, and legal scholars to scrutinize the logic and evidence behind the widely held belief in a color-blind society―and to provide an alternative explanation for continued racial inequality in the United States. While not denying the economic advances of black Americans since the 1960s, Whitewashing Race draws on new and compelling research to demonstrate the persistence of racism and the effects of organized racial advantage across many institutions in American society―including the labor market, the welfare state, the criminal justice system, and schools and universities. Looking beyond the stalled debate over current antidiscrimination policies, the authors also put forth a fresh vision for achieving genuine racial equality of opportunity in a post-affirmative action world.

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. 1st. ed., 1st printing ; 305 p. ; 25 cm. ; SIGNED by author on title page ISBN 067943982X ; LCCN 95031552 ; LOC No PS3569.H39145 W66 1996 ; OCLC 32819757 ; blue cloth in pictorial dustjacket ; A Southern family saga featuring one protagonist, but many narrators. Th…e protagonist is Harrison Durrance of Georgia and the narrators include a fellow cadet from West Point, his wife, his sister, his mistress, his children. In the course of portraying this one man from various and sometimes conflicting points of view, a family's history is told. A first novel ; The Wonder Book of the Air leads us through the lives of three generations in a Southern family. At the center is Harrison Durrance, who learns early that the nature of love is both transaction and transgression. As a young man he comes into his own during World War II, where he falls for the magic of flight and thrives on the danger of battle. He has become a man of undeniable magnetism, brash and vigorously optimistic. But when the war is over and he is back on the ground - in cold-war America - Harrison loses his bearings and catapults out of orbit. As his notions of the world begin to fail him and the people he claims to love fail to understand him, he sabotages his career, drinks to excess, and drives his family into emotional bedlam. But the story is not Harrison's alone. In Cynthia Shearer's arresting vision, the turbulence Harrison creates is woven into a canvas that captures the seismic shifts of history, of change, of forces that we try to name to protect ourselves from their randomness. In the wake of Harrison's terrifying-and-terrified behavior, we watch his children search for hope in the emotional wreckage and find some understanding of solace, compassion, and love. --Source: Publisher ; Cynthia Shearer is the former curator of Rowan Oak, the home of William Faulkner, and holds a M.A. in English from the University of Mississippi. She has been the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. ; bookplate of Decatur Book Festival volunteer David Neville (1951-2020) ; FINE/FINE. Signed by Author(s). Book.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. Limited Edition. 162 pages with photo illustrations and 34 pf these are textual reminiscences by this writer who lived on the estate, the remainder are photo illustrations many full page. The soft card laminated covers are clean, a corner crease to top of the rear cover, cloth spine. Large slim quar…to. Undated but last dates mentioned are 2005 in the text, so assume it goes up until this period. It feels older 1960's and this was when the stately home was demolished (1964) and now the M1 runs through what was the house and some of the lands. Uncommon book with a provincial imprint and I suspect low numbers produced. There is an 8 page list of other publications by this man at the rear. No other copy for sale online at this time.
