Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books.Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices.

The first paper offered here is Planck's first paper on radiant heat and the quantum hypothesis. In it he discusses the problem of the resonant scattering of plane electromagnetic waves by an oscillating dipole of dimensions small compared to the wave length. This study was undertaken as a preliminary to tackling the problem of black-body radiation. The scattering process offered a way of understanding how the equilibrium state of the radiation in an enclosure at fixed temperature could be maintained. The underlying problem was the thermodynamics of radiation. "Planck combined Clausius' phenomenological method with Kirchhoff's theorem that light and heat radiation in thermal equilibrium are independent of the nature of the substance, a theorem that filled Planck with enthusiasm. This combination, along with the statistical methods of calculation, was what would lead him in 1900 to the energy elements of the new radiation law." DSB, XI, p. 9. Planck won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1918 "in recognition of the services rendered by him to the development of physics by his discovery of the elementary quanta." Nobel, the man and his prizes. These two volumes of the Annalen der Physik also contain four articles on the controversy over the existence of atoms involving Planck, Ludwig Boltzmann and Wilhelm Ostwald. In his paper entitled "Energetik", Ostwald asserted that molecules and atoms are nothing but mathematical fictions. Energy, in its many forms, is the primary physical reality. Planck's opposition was based on his adherence to the second law of thermodynamics as articulated by Rudolf Clausius (1822-1888). Boltzmann had also formulated a theory of the second law of thermodynamics, which was hard to swallow for those who did not believe in molecular reality. Boltzmann believed in the particulate structure of matter, but his statistical assertion was a sticking point for Planck and others; Boltzmann asserted that entropy increases almost always, rather than always. Planck argued for the consistency of the second law. These papers summarize an often bitter, but no less important argument conducted at the historical moment when the existence of atoms had not yet attained experimental proof. For a summary of the presentation of Ostwald's paper on "Energetik" before the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Naturforscher und Arzte in 1895, and the resultant conflict, see Pais, Subtle is the Lord, pp. 82-83. Planck: DSB, XI, pp. 7-17; Klein, "Thermodynamics and quanta in Planck's work," in Weart & Phillips, History of physics, pp. 294-302; Nobel, the man and his prizes, p. 478; Wasson, Nobel Prize winners, pp. 820-823. Boltzmann: DSB, II, pp. 266-267. Ostwald: DSB, Supplement, pp. 251-252.
