Ajouter au panierMcCall, Mitzi, 1916-. As it was in the beginning. Sussex, England: Book Guild, 1998, viii, 99pp., very good dust-jacket BUT stained at bottom of spine on inside, black rubbed off from binding, very good black cloth, tiny stain at bottom of spine. INSCRIBED and SIGNED label pasted onto half-title page: To *** My last book, it ties everything up, love Mitzi. Between 4-13 September 1995 a superb retrospective exhibition of artist Charles McCall's paintings and drawings took place at Christie's in London. The event was opened by Princess Michael of Kent, and brought together some 300 examples of the painter's work, a fitting and moving tribute to his productivity and largely unrecognised genius. The exhibition was the culmination of his widow Mitzi's determination to look after Charles's work and maintain and promote his reputation following his death in 1989. This is the last book in her series concerned with her long association with the artist, which began on Christmas Day 1943, and it presents a fitting conclusion by describing the events leading to Charles's death, and the way in which Mitzi rebuilt her life over the years that followed. What emerges is a moving portrait of the artist, and a fascinating insight into a woman whose determination and fortitude in the face of adversity are as remarkable as they are inspiring. Mitzi travelled extensively in the years following her husband's death, and, never once daunted by long flights and awkward officials, managed to visit the USA, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Venice and Paris, and her experiences of these places and the people she met there are recounted with warmth and vibrancy. These trips were made all the more special for her by the fact that, wherever she went, she would come across examples of Charles's work in the homes of her many hosts. This book is a final, fitting tribute to a great artist, but it is also a tribute to the tireless exploits of his widow, and proof that the bonds of love really can transcend death. Charles has never really left Mitzi, and she remains fortified by him and by his work to this day. Painting on front of Jacket: 'The Artist's Wife' by Charles McCall. 9781857762846 ISBN 1857762843.
